Driver accidentally pulled steering wheel to left. The car swerved partially off the road, and the driver panicked and hit the brakes with two wheels on pavement, two on gravel. The car flipped twice, ended up right side up. The initial impact was on the left rear end of the car. Driver and passenger walked away unharmed. The car was being driven by the owner's sister at the time of the accident, and the owner was the passenger. Thanks to Richard Cross for sharing his information & pictures with us. Other car was travelling wrong way in oncoming lane, Insight driver swerved to avoid head-on collision, but was still hit side-on, with oncoming car travelling at about 45 mph (70 km/h). In these pictures you can clearly see how the Insight's side impact beams did their job: Click on any of the thumbnails below to view the full image: Here is what happened... I was on my way to work, traveling at approximately 45 mph and on the inside lane of a 4 lane road. There was a red pickup in front of me that was blocking my view from what lay ahead. Suddenly the pickup swerved into the right hand lane and just missed an oncoming vehicle... I was only 30 feet or so behind the truck so basically I had no chance of making it :( I cranked the wheel to the right and was struck hard on the driver's side by a guy heading the wrong way in my lane. The air bags went off like a charm and gave me a nice punch in the face while glass chunks flew everywhere from the door and rear window. Thankfully, I was wearing my seat belt and my injuries were limited to whiplash, a small gash on the face, and a black eye. The surprisingly tough little insight held up pretty well considering the car that hit me was an '84 Buick 4 dr sedan (big boat). From the pictures you can see that the side impact beams took most of the blow. I am pleased that I didn't get a chance to test out the front crumple zone in this one - a combined speed of 90 mph might have been a bit too much for the car (and me!) to handle. After the impact, the engine died instantly but I was able to coast into the nearest business without any effort. The hood popped up against the windshield (a bit scary) but it I was able to look out of the door with the missing window. Regardless, I crawled out of the window after the wreck and went back to work the next day. I feel that this is a strong testament to the real-world safety that an Insight offers - I just finished picking up my new one tonight! I bought the exact same one, color and all. - Keith Rogers (VIN: JHMZE13761T000591)
Here are some photos of a recent accident. The Lincoln hit my parked Insight from behind and forced it into a Mazda and Civic in front of it. Estimates of his speed are around 30-35 mph (48 - 56 km/h). The inside cab area stayed pretty much intact. - Peter Beargie

The car did well in the accident in that the drivers space was not impacted. I was driving down a country road at 55mph being tailed by an Isuzu Rodeo by approx. 5 car lengths. I slowed down quickly to make a left turn and he wasn't looking. When he looked up and found himself almost on top of me he decided to try to go around me to the left rather than go off a steep shoulder on the right. My car was at a 45 degree angle to his SUV on impact. He hit my driver's side door and slid across the left side of my car as we both turned away from each other. He took off my side mirror and scraped up the body but did not damage the steering or anything mechanical. The side impact beams weren't put to a severe test, but none the less my driving space was not impacted. I took it to the dealer for the repair and $2200 (insurance $)later the car looks fine. - Chris VanMaaren
We don't know the details of what happened to this Insight, other than that it was put up for sale under salvage title on ebay.com. The highest bid was $5,1000. You'll notice in these pictures that all parts damaged in the accident have already been removed, allowing a lot of the Insight's normally hidden underlying structure to be seen.
