Mine didn't smell at all, maybe I was just lucky. I was an organic chemist so I have a good nose for different organic compounds.
I put my 1 gallon tank in the well in the back of the Insight-I hatch area (next to the actual gas tank as a matter of fact!). But if you feel these tanks are dangerous then don't do it. Mileage per tank really doesn't matter as much as mpg anyway.
