You may only have one that actually failed but the other is not strong enough to handle the additional load making it seem like it failed as well.

I had this happen to me awhile back but I purchased two from Majestic anyway (back when they would still ship them).

When it is very cold outside, I slowly open the hatch pausing a bit then opening more, pause then open till fully extended. This seems to be less stressful in the extreme cold weather. I also do this to the hood of my Lexus ES300. I don't know if this will really help to prevent failure but I have been doing that method over the last five years or so. I open it normally in the warmer weather though.
