I have a perfectly good insight that I can't drive because of lack of a title and it seems to be a large pita to get one. So I'm looking at using it to resurrect someone else's dead insight if possible.
I'm looking buy an insight w/ a decent body, a title and not much else. Anyone have something like that they want to part with in the Midwest? Mine is a 2000 5 speed.
Just go through the process for filing a lost title. It only takes a couple of months.
What happened to the title?

Car is a salvage, it's body is a bit beat up. It was hit and totaled at some point, then somone bought it from a slavage yard and told me it had a salvage title. Not that it had "no" title. My fault for not following up quickly on that one. I've called the DMV they sid if the car has been sent to a slavage yard it is done, no more title and we wont let you have one.
I don't know what state you're in, but some states just don't allow making salvaged cars road worthy again. Some states after you buy a car with no title because it was salvaged, after you repair the car and make it road worthy as approved by highway patrol/BAR, they let you get a salvaged title. I don't remember how much a salvaged title costs, but it's not cheap.
I know in California I just need to go to the DMV and show them everything works and get proof and what not. After that you go through another process and it's good. It could be that the person you dealt with was just a turd and didn't want to help you at all.

No, in most states, once it is "junked" (processed into a junkyard) it cannot be issued a salvage title - ever.

Ahh. I see. Weird, I wasn't aware of that. So how does a car ever end up with a salvage title, then?
That seems really stupid. Is the VIN like blacklisted or something?
I would be surprised if the two states I've lived in (Oregon and New Mexico) do such a thing. I've never heard of it.

A salvage title is issued (and the standard title revoked) when an insurance company declares a "total" loss (more than x% ratio of repair cost to value). A salvage title or standard title is revoked when the car enters the junkyard. It may not EVER have a title reissued.
Most junkyards maintain an auto sales company and a recycling company. When a car comes in, it is sold to the auto sales company if it may be resold or sold to the recycling company if it is to be scrapped.
The problem is that this car came into the recycling side and then somebody resold it.
Or it's stolen and they tricked HAL9000 into buying it.
