He told me it gets 35-40 mpg on it now. Now that he's giving out different mpg numbers I'd be worried.

Is that city, highway, or combined? Probably just something lost in translation. Maybe 35-40 is typical and he was able to get 55MPG by keeping his foot out of it? Would be hard, I admit.
