New TAX for fuel efficient vehicles under consideration...
Seems that not using alot of gas is Un Amerikan....
Heard this AM on the NPR station that legislators are considering special taxes for fuel efficinet vehicles......because the Federal Highway Reserve is getting low....and it is funded by taxes on each gallon of gas....and we Insighters are not doing our part to guzzle gas....so we ARE the problem...and the solution is to impose a special tax on fuel efficient cars....the more efficient,the higher the tax....

We don't have a Lobby strong enough to fight this,and they know that...which is why we are targeted....

"We" is a hypothetical group collectively composed of people who make energy efficient lifestyle choices.....preferring to do more with less,especially when it comes to non -renewable resources...
I am sure there are some groups lobbying on the behalf of those causes,some of which are well known.But smaller groups,with fewer constituents, who lack financial/political influence are often targeted...precisely for that reason...

Sorry, I should have been more specific. Where are you from? I'm suspecting that you are outside the US, but your profile doesn't indicate.
I know here in the US there was a proposal to equip new vehicles with a GPS monitoring system to track miles driven, and tax on that rather than fuel consumption. I haven't heard anything about it for a while now though.

In all fairness, the tax isn't being considered because hybrids are good on gas, per se. It is trying to level the playing field so that those cars that get good gas pay an equal share of road repairs, repairs which are usually paid by gas taxes. There is also a push (primarily by Bill Ford of Ford Motors) to get tax RELIEF for hybrids. As a owner of a humongous SUV shouldn't I be complaining that I am being discriminated against? Nope. I suspect that any legislation that makes it more difficult to buy a hybrid will be soundly defeated. While it may be true that hybrids aren't contibuting the the general road repair funds, they are also not contributing their their destruction nearly as much as my gas sucking SUV (which I am sure weighs 3 tons). However, a tax (as specified in the report) that charges vehicles a tax per mile certainly does seem a little more fair. However, to make it really fair they should also calculate weight of vehicle.
