Default tire & rim cleaner

I was wondering what fellow Insight owners use to clean their tires & rims? Some of the cleaners I saw at Autozone looked like they might be too caustic. Any recommendations?

After washing the car I take the left over car wash soap and use my wheel face brush. Works great, no scratching what so ever and the bristles get down in the little slots.

For the tires they make a specific tire cleaner now which you should be able to find (I use their in bulk all purpose cleaner), and scrub with this brush:

The bristles around the edge are soft so if you hit the wheel it won't scratch them.

The Insight wheels are clear coated from the factory so most wheel cleaners should be ok on them except some chrome only cleaners which car caustic either being acidic or usually extremely base. The safest thing for any wheel is to use ph balanced car wash soap and a nice soft brush to release any dirt. Too strong of a soap or cleaner can over time kill the clear coat.

If you really want to get nuts like me a Mr.Clean magic eraser works well to remove the brake dust from the back of the wheel.

Rick,

Thanks for all the info. I definately plan on ordering the tire & wheel brushes. You must have THE cleanest Insight around!

i use a couple things for my wheels. for getting my tires to shine, i use Black Magic Tire Wet Foam. it's really easy to put on, doesn't require any wiping, cleaning, etc.

for cleaning up the wheels from dirt or brake dust, i use simple green, the same stuff i use to clean my engine. i've never seen a degreaser/cleaner work as good as simple green, and it's complete safe and cleans up easy as well.

i usually do my engine and wheels at the same time, bring it right to the do it yourself car wash. since i show my car often during the warmer months, i do this process once a month.

for the first time doing this, you might want to take a cloth to get off and dirt or grime that may have built up over the years (depending on how old your car is and your environment, of course).

after that, simple green the engine and wheels, and let it sit for 5 mins. blast the simple green off with the pressure washer, then respray the simple green. wash it off again with the pressure washer, and then foam the tires. it will look better than new!!!

If your going to order the wheel and tire brush I would suggest getting the wash brush as well. I've been using their wide one for almost a year now and it's been great. Imagine being able to wash your car and not get your hand wet. I would imagine that would be a big thing for the winter in MA.

Fair warning, "detailing" will become and obcession.
