Default "Rebuilt" 2006 on Ebay...no IMA warranty?

Hi All,

My mom is looking at buying the 06 on Ebay with only 23k miles. The car was in an accident but is apparently all fixed up. It is now a "rebuilt" title.

It looks like a great deal, however as I understand it the mfg IMA battery warranty is not in effect on Rebuilt titles? What is the lowdown on that?

Does she just hope that it doesn't go bad? If the car has been sitting around a lot (as one would assume with only 23k) the IMA batt must self-discharge and how bad is that for longevity?

Any advice appreciated.

That's correct, no warranty on salvage title vehicles.

Such low miles doesn't necessarily mean that there IS an IMA battery problem, but it doesn't exactly bode well either.

Looking at the car, the repair looks reasonable. There are no obnoxiously misaligned body panel gaps. The car does look very clean and nice.

Hmm. Tough choice. Overall, I wouldn't worry about the rebuilt title as much as the non-existant battery warranty. That's one of the biggest advantages of a newer model year.

It may be an acceptable risk. Just budget 2k for a BetterBattery, worst case scenario.

I cannot address your question about the IMA battery warranty.
I can tell you that personally, I WILL NEVER BUY A CAR ON EBAY AGAIN.

I totaled my 2000 Insight in an accident in February.
I replaced it with a 2002 Insight that I bought on eBay in March. It was a rebuilt title (FL) that was "properly restored." It was "a 9.5 out of 10."

Do NOT trust what a seller says. Get a visual inspection of the car in person. My seller posted many pictures for disclosure. The items in the pictures looked OK but look worse in person. This car was NOT a 9.5 out of 10. Hard for me to know that in PA with the car in FL.

eBay Motors buyer guarantee only protects in respect to major component misrepresentation or breakdown, NOT what they call "buyer remorse." The fact that my car was misrepresented was MY problem. I did not do my homework. (get an inspection)

Transferring a branded title (rebuilt) from FL to PA was problematic and required special inspections and special paperwork only done by certain inspection stations. Be sure you know how to transfer the rebuilt title in your state.

If I sound somewhat bitter it is because I am. I wish I never bought my 2002 Insight. For that matter, I wish I never totaled my 2000 (bought new). I still think these are cool little cars. Love the fuel economy. I just got a Genesis One grid charger for it from Mike. I will keep this car for a while but I suggest that your Mom DOES NOT buy from eBay.

Cindy

As a further note -- at least this eBay car is sold through a dealer and not a private individual.

Good point; at least they will want to keep their 100% rating...

I agree with Cindy overall. Do your homework.

It's likely that you can find a better car for the money. Note that better doesn't necessarily mean a late model year with ultra low miles.

It's really tough to tell though, this could be a great deal... If you're thinking about dropping 10k on a car, it's a no brainer to get it inspected. The inspection won't tell you anything about the IMA battery condition, but it can help ease your mind regarding the salvage title.

These cars are very easily totalled because of the aluminum construction. If the repair actually was done properly, it's probably not a big deal. If it wasn't.. well.. buyer beware.

Default so how do you interpet this?

Honda Press Releases - 2006 Honda Warranty Information - March 16, 2006

this is a press release for a 2006 honda warranty..

under accord hybrid**, civic hybrid**, insight (note the *'s)

Emissions warranty

Federal 3/36
8/80 (specified major emission control components)

California
3/50 and 7/70 specified major emission control components
10/150 (IMA Battery), 15/150 AT-PZEV** (CA, NY, ME, VT, MA , CT)

I read it as being a Cali car, I have the 10/150.... If it would have been a Civic or Accord Hybrid, i would have had a 15/150.

Any input?
