Default Looking for Insight/Hybrid!!

I just moved to DC and live 66 miles from work (was planning on taking commuter train but my job description lied about where I was working and my commute was regularly 4.5-6.5 hours a day, with driving it's more like 3 hours when I leave at 0230) I'm desperate for a hybrid if anyone is selling. I need something cheap as I'm planning on purchasing a 2009 model Prius or the new undisclosed Honda replacement for the Insight when they become available.
Take pity on me please!! I have a tank of a truck! It gets the best MPG of most of the trucks ~19 because I did my research...but I need it to pull my horse...not so great on commuting 130 miles a day!

If anyone has an Insight/Hybrid they want to sell/lease either in the DC area, in OH (my reserve duty), or close enough that it won't cost an arm and a leg to pick it up or ship it, I'd be entirely grateful!! So far my Ebay experience has been bad...the "no problems" Insight I almost purchased ended up having the bumper held on by zip-ties and mpg not above 36 after 25 min of driving. If he lied about the bumper what else was he lying about??? Then I "bought" one New Years Eve at a dealership only to have them call the next day and tell me they sold it out from under me!

Thanks! Any help would be appreciated!

Just saw your note and can offer the following for what little it may be worth.

. Be ready to travel, fly to if the need be, to get "THE" car, then drive it back home.

. That low mileage you spoke of, "36 after 25 min of driving" may well have been due to your inexperience in driving these little cars and right now the term "hyper-mileing" may not mean too much to you - you can't drive these little cars like a truck. If you do, you will get very poor mileage.

. As for having the care "sold ... out from under me!" - that doesn't sound right. If you put money down and signed a purchase agreement, odds are you had an enforceable contract. If you didn't, you didn't. If you did, it might be worth your while to consult with competent legal counsel about the affair.

These days, when looking for a decent Insight, be ready to move and move fast to get it - the first one in, with the most money will get it.

Hope this helps.

What is a typical life mpg of the insights? I know it depends on driving habits and driving conditions, but what should I expect to see (when I push the FCD? button) without thinking something may be wrong with the car?

I understand about not knowing how to drive them yet, but I get more in my hubby's civic (in OH) than I was getting in the Insight...part of it may be it was an automatic, but I didn't think that would lower it to the point of a normal car. ??

What are some of the things I really need to consider if I buy a car sight unseen? What are some of the questions I should ask? What kind of miles can I reasonably expect from the Insight?

Thanks!

When I bought my 2000 MT in 2003, it had about 50K miles and about 50 lmpg showing. I reset it soon after, and at about 115K am showing 70.2 lmpg. I drive in mountains a lot, but not much stop & go city traffic, so YMMV.

For stop and go traffic the Prius is probably a better bet...

As understood here, the mpg of an "typical" Insight - there may be no such thing.

if I'm not mistaken you were talking about test driving the car in cold weather and if that was so, consider for a moment the mpg ratings the "normal" cars were getting at the same time you were involved in that test drive. There's only three cyllnders in that little Insight engine, so odds are those "normal cars" were probably getting a lot less in mpg use than you were getting at the time.

As for buying a car "sign unseen" I can offer the following:

I'm in sales and years of experience has shown me that the vast majority of people you meet are a decent and honest lot but yes, you're correct to suspect that there are thieves and liars out there.

While some may laugh at the suggestion, I ask you, is there a local lawyer near you who you trust? Do one of your friends or neighbors whose opinions you trust, know of one?

In any event, after contacting a seller who may have an Insight you're interested in, then go about getting from the seller as much information as you can about the car - in writing. Ask the seller about the car, repeating each and every one of his/her claims which you may have seen in advertising as well as what he/she may have told you about the car over the telephone or in person. Odds are they're "puffing it" a bit and that is permitted - outright falsehoods are not.

Check with your local DMV, who probably has a web site with information about how to go about checking up on a specific car; you'll need the VIN, along with the make and model.

if at all practical for you, a test drive would be in your interest and if your husband isn't knowledgable regarding automotive affairs, I'll be there's a local Honda dealer near where the car is, who for a small fee, will be glad to inspect the car for you - keep in mind, these cars are different, internally as well as externally from anything you may be used to up to this point in time.

And yes, the man, Douggie I believe it was, was correct when he suggested that if you're going to be driving in a lot of stop and go traffic, the little Insight may NOT be the right car for you. Perhaps you should be looking at a converted and now an all electric vehicle or perhaps you should be looking at something like the Aptera, whose manufacturer is in California and who is now taking deposits for the car which I believe is due to come out this Fall. It'll cost you slightly more than a used ("pre-owned") Honda Insight but there clearly appears to be an outstanding two seater about hit the American highways.

Hope this helps.

36 mpg fter 25 minutes of driving might indicate an IMA problem also.

You really, really have to move fast when buying an Insight. I have seen two (I think maybbe even three) Insights on autotrader that got sold in under two days. TWO days.

Default Thanks!

I got an insight on Sat...2000/103K/new battery/for $6200 only 40 miles from me! Thank you all for your help and suggestions. I'm supper excited to drive it! I've been cleaning it and buying things for it the past three days and I sanded down the peeling laquered black portion of the hatch to prep it for painting. Can't wait to get it sparkling again.

I drive 80% highway and 20% city near DC with 66 miles each way. I mostly avoid heavy traffic by leaving for work at 0230 and coming home at 1430. So I think the insight was the best choice of the available options.

Thanks for the Aptera info...I looked it up and it'll be available only in CA for the first little while. In a year or three I'd like to get one of the upcoming supper MPG cars, but for now the Insight is still the best on the road.

Quick question...I am having a hard time finding the forum thread for what lean burn is and how to get/stay in it. If you know where it is can you post a link? I'm getting close to 60 right now in the freezing weather but it sounds like I could/should be doing a tad better as I learn to drive it correctly. I just put the radiator cardboard mod in so I'll see how that goes tomorrow.

Thanks again.

Lean burn is defined here:
http://www.insightcentral.net/KB/faq-terms.html

Basically any time the iMPG bar shows >75mpg and you're lightly on the throttle you're in lean burn.

A good way to feel it is to get going around 50-60mph in 5th on a fairly level roadway. Gradually let up on the gas until the iMPG bar goes up to say 100-150mpg. You should feel that the car is not generating much power. Now ease the throttle back on very gradually and watch the iMPG value drop. Between 75 and 50 mpg you will feel a slight surge of power as normal burn cuts back in. Keep easing the throttle on, and as the mpg dips below 50mpg you will feel another surge as the electric assist kicks in (you will see this as yellow bars on the assist/regen gauge).

For great mpg you want to stay in lean burn as much as you can, or coast in neutral if you come to a downhill. Very small movements on the throttle, may take a while to train your right foot.

Congratulations! I'm so jealous.
