Default 1st Post New Owner

Hello All,
I have been reading this site for a while and searching for an Insight even longer. After losing Two on Ebay and one at a Ford dealer in OH, I almost broke down and got a Prius or Civic Hybrid. The day after losing one in CA on Ebay, I found a CVT with 32k. I am picking it up Tomorrow and was wondering, how does one reset the mpg so I can start from the day I pick it up.
Thank You

Persistance pays off! Nice going - and only 32,000 miles!

About that resetting the displays for MPG, if you're not aware of it, there are three (3) of them; the "A", the "B" and the "L" or lifetime MPG displays. These are controlled by the "TRIP" button, which is right next to the metric/mph conversion button, both of which are located right below the indicator which shows what position your CVT lever is in.

Regarding those MPG guages or displays, a "trick" I learned here about two years ago is the following: Use the "A" display for Daily operations, that is to say, at the end of each day, note the MPG and miles driven that day and if you wish, log it in, then press the "TRIP" button and hold it down for about five seconds or so - it'll clear to zero.

Use the "B" guage/display to give you a good idea of MPG for tank of fuel and each time you fill up, clear it, again aftger you make a note of it.

As for the "L" MPG guage, suggest leave it alone. This one will tell you the "Life Time" MPG and the total miles on the car since new. Odds are you and/or the next owner will want that information.

Best of luck with the Car!

p.s. Thought of a "pet name" for the little beast yet?

Hey there,
Congratulations on the great find! You'll see when you play with the buttons a bit that you can't reset the Lifetime MPG, however there are several other segments that can be reset to keep track of your lifetime mileage. "Trip A", "Trip B", and another unnamed segment. Welcome to the club.

You _can_ reset the LMPG -- it's not as easy as just pressing the buttons on the dash. I have not ever done it but I know others on this site have...
Search, and ye shall find...

Regarding the Lifetime MPG of the car...that is exactly what it is and should be left alone since it represents a record of the cars usage of fuel from day one. Changing it to just reflect your own consumption would be like zeroing the total miles the car has traveled for your own convience.
There are two tripmeters to keep records of your own MPG figures but to me zeroing the LTMPG setting is about self gratification to impress others.

Personaly I think that the lifetime fuel consumption figure and what you do with it is up to you. If you re-set it, it will then reflect your mileage gaining abilities and re-setting it does not zero the total miles on the odo meter, just the mpg. Once re-set, the reading varies quit a lot for the first few miles, but once there are a few k's under your belt it settles down to being the long distance average it is. If you do not re-set it, and you are doing better figs than the previous owner it will still get better, but at a much slower rate. It is up to you.

To re set it, Turn the ignition on. Use the trip button to display the odometer. Press and hold the trip button untill the display blinks (five seconds approx) release the trip button, then press and hold untill the display clears. You are then done...turn ign off.

I cleared mine, so I know it is showing my figs. No one can tell if you have zeroed it, and someone elses figs have no relavance to you.....Note that if you think you are going to do worse figs than the previous owner, you might want to keep it as it is....But you would then be cheating if you use the figure for bragging

Thanks for posting... good to know it's that easy... kinda scary, though... seems like something I might've tried when trying to clear a maintenance required light, and too lazy to pull out the manual...

I'm generally of the opinion that the LMPG should be left alone, since it represents the history of the car... but I also can see why someone would want to reset it. I'm just glad that the two used Insights I've bought didn't have low LMPG numbers, so no need to reset them!

Thanks to Everyone that has replied. I am picking it up tomorrow in Kingman AZ. I may have my wife and boys name it, instead of using it. Sounds like i could use the "B" trip for my own personal life time mpg average instead of trying to reset the lmpg. Just hope it doesn't have a low lmpg. I have to get back for a graduation Thursday and The Route 66 NHRA Nationals Fri, Sat & Sun. As a result I don't think I will be doing my best to conserve fuel but will post my fist 1800 mile trip. I am thinking, hoping I may still average 55-60 mpg. Other than the obvious raising tire pressure and slowing down, anything anyone might think of to get the most from the trip? Thanks again.

Oh, go on and reset the LMPG display already. It's your car, and it should reflect your usage. It's not carved in granite... This "controversy" has been touched on before, and we all agree to disagree. Follow your heart...

Just so you know, the A and B odos reset to zero after 2000 miles... as in, 1998, 1999, 2000, 0001, 0002...

The A or B will also reset if you inadvertently hold down the trip button, which I have done by spacing out while I was checking them.
