My husband and I have learned to pack the little car full in order to travel across country or to bring all of his musical equipment to one of his gigs. The best thing we found was some long and stout plastic Sterilite containers- http://www.sterilite.com/Category.html? ... tegory=40#
We had 2 containers that went from the seats to the back of the hatchback. This allows for vertical space between the two. We also packed behind the seats. To top it off, a djembe drum drum between us and far enough behind elbow room for shifting.

Be careful not to block the air vent immediately behind the passenger seat. When the batteries in the back get warm enough, a fan turns on and draws air through this vent. Blocking the vent could affect proper cooling of the batteries.
