Last time I check a company called Vminnovations.com had the kicker S8L5 subs for about 55 to 60 dollars. The voice coil options are usually limited to dual 2 ohm or dual 4 ohm coils. I have wired these subs many ways and also just used one of the 2 coils with no problems. I havnt had a single sub go bad or any issues. For under 80.00 this is one serious sub,its built like a tank. I have found in my box 200 watts is enough power for all but very serious car audio nuts. I also like the new class D sub amps. They are cheap and draw less current. Its difficult to hear any distortion under 0.10 THD through a sub woofer anyways. I have driven mine very hard and have yet to fry a voice coil. For those who didnt follow my entire build thread which is now getting old I have been making speaker boxes of various kinds for 22 years now. This particular one has become one of my favorites. It really performs that well. Shawn
I just made another one of these stealth sub woofers for the Insight. I do still make them if anyone would like one. They are quite a bit of work but worth the effort in my opinion. No matter how much damping I do I just cant get any sort of decent bass response from my front door coaxials. I think the Insight had some amazing engineering in the fuel mileage department but the audio system is one of the absolute worst I have heard yet. I am a audio nut and the stock system in my car sounded so bad I drove around for months in silence when I first bought the car. That inspired me to redesign the shoebox sub in a way to incorporate the newer kicker S8L5 square subwoofer. Its not the cheapest option out there buy good isn't cheap and cheap isn't good. It will however completely fill the car with accurate bass response, very controlled. If anyones interested or has questions email me, I don't check pm's often as I'm rarely on here these days. The Insight just
break that much...lol.
I never checked this thread before, never really cared about subwoofers until...... I bought a citrus Insight that came with a subwoofer, I love the sound!!, the only downside is that it takes up all the storage space in the little hatch in the back, and to get to the spare tire it has to be removed.
For people that don't care much about a good sound system, you have to have one for a few days and it will be hard to go back to just plain speakers.
Expertfabricator, I just read this whole thread and can't believe that there have not been that many takers....could be the price but quality doesn't come cheap.
Glad you're still making them. I'm definitely interested, but still no room in the budget for audio.. I will get some at some point.

I LOVE my Wayland Shoebox Sub. I got lucky when I bought my car and got one of the 100 or so cars worldwide that have it. The guy I bought it from didn't know what he had, either, so I'm guessing it was an owner or two before him that installed it.

I sold mine to Insool after my I1 was totalled. My dad's got an I1 he bought less than a year ago but he's a bit of a cheapskate and that car will get into worse and worse shape till it rots in his driveway .

I responded to your email. The box I make goes to the right on the rear factory bin and does not need to be removed in order to access the spare tire. It uses the space the Japanese GPS unit would go into, at least thats what I've been told. I realize these boxes seem expensive but the time it takes to make them right and the cost of the materials it really is a good price. I reduced the price from 300.00 to 250.00 for the box without a woofer. I have found some great buys on the kicker S8L5 woofer on ebay and other online sites. I don't sell the boxes loaded anymore. But they are ready to simply have the woofer mounted and are then 100% ready to be used. I also include color step by step directions with pictures showing exactly how to install the box making it very easy. Feel free to ask any questions.
The box simply sits in place. It has about 1/8" clearance on all sides, there is some areas you could run wires around it. Its hefty and dosnt move once in place. Its molded to fit into that space and thats what holds it there. It also can be removed if you decide to sell your car and nobody would ever know it was there. There is a metal panel that comes out for floor support in that corner. The box becomes the rear right corner floor support. If removed the original metal panel can be bolted back in place. I love mine and everyone who bought one has been very happy with it. I cant add any more pictures on this thread but I can email some to you. Shawn
