I was rear-ended by a teenage girl on Thursday morning on the way to work, and I am very happy with the way my car performed -- honestly, it looked much better than the other girl's car (hood crumpled, windshield cracked a lot, airbags deployed on her end) -- turns out most of the damage in underneath, where apparently the car looks like an accordion.
This is the car I was planning to sell because my '06 CVT arrived on Friday evening. (What luck, eh? Any insurance adjuster would be right to be suspicious, except that it's apparent I had no way to prevent this accident.) I'm already thinking of what I can possible scavenge from the '03 -- I had speaker mods & a Rostra cruise control.... Not to mention the $16 screws to hold the wheel skirts in place. Just thinking about this makes me sad.
And no doubt I can look forward to a debate with insurance about the value of my car. It was just over 118k.
Dude, sorry to hear it. ANY Gen 1 Insight taken off the road brings a tear to my eye. I would definitely strip it of the Cruise and any other aftermarket installs if you can. Good luck fighting the good fight with the insurance adjuster. Too bad it didn't happen when gas was $4.00 a gallon.

Thanks. I went over this afternoon & pulled just about everything I could out of it (except stuff I needed tools for). Sadly, the dzus screws were missing. I hope the insurance company will part it out when they total it, because there's tons of perfectly functional parts in it.
Sorry to hear about the car and thankfully you weren't hurt.
Find out what the salvage cost is (the cost for you to buy the car back from the insurance company). I'll give you $300 for the battery.
Remember that it won't be your insurance company, but rather the girl's insurance company.

I don't know for sure that the battery was not damaged... the damage was so extensive that when they hit a certain $$$$ amount, they just stopped and let insurance know. So they haven't actually looked at the battery.
Do find out how much the salvage buyback price is. I'm sure you could part the car out for a tidy profit, or sell it whole to someone who's rebuilding an Insight that was in a frontal collision.

Their value for the car is $6.3k. Salvage value $1,041.19. I'm going to talk it over with my DH tonight, because he'd be the one to deal with the parts if we go that route. (I love being married to a mechanical engineer!)
I also have to figure out if this is a good cash value. It is lower than I hoped, but not lower than I expected, if that makes sense.
