It's a great event, but I agree that the entry fee is excessive. The main attraction is the people and their cars that attend. They should actually pay you to show up! I live very close, and participated last year. I will attend this year, but am not going to give them my $75 for the pleasure. I'll just be a visitor.
To get the full experience, you'd have to spend another $100 for the meals, plus $100's for the hotel. NO THANKS.
Again, it is a nice event, and I encourage everyone to consider participating to whatever level ($) they feel they want. I would be glad to help anyone find cheaper lodging (camping?) in the area. Just PM me and I will do whatever I can. I would love to me meet any of you great Insight enthusiasts this summer.
Sincerely, Kevin
Maybe I'll make it up and lap around their track a few times and declare myself the unofficial winner (cause I'll be the only one competing in my imaginary race)!
I'm glad to hear that you guys agree about the fees. I tend to be cheap and hate to see people complain about it when they love to waste their money.
I believe the winner in the Insight class was 145mpg(Bill Kinney). Second place was about 122mpg (Bradley Fons). Third place was about 90 mpg. You can see all the results at greendriveexpo.com as soon as they post them. They finally changed the course this year after leaving if the same for several years. I still need to contact and see it 1st and 2nd used a SG2 or FCD. I could have had a shot at 3rd, but their is no way I could touch 2nd or 1st. VERY hard to believe.
In division 1 (Insights)
1. Bill Kinney had 148 (up from his 122 last year)
2. Justin Fons (Bradlee's son) got 133 (up from his 109 last year)
3. Robertsmalls 98.x
4. Ron Hansen (me) 95.6 (up from 76 last year)

Really wish I would have planned ahead and made the trip. At least next year, I'll have a full year of Insight ownership under my belt and maybe some more interesting goodies to share.
It was a 25mi course that must be completed in 55 minutes. A quarter of it is 55mph expressway and the rest is country roads. I think there were about seven stop signs, and more elevation change than you'd find from sea level to the highest point in Florida.
133mpg is not inconcievable, since 148mpg is clearly possible.
I'm looking for the results of the Green Drive MPG run.
I'm curious what all of the cars did and if there were any Hondas in the run other than our 1st Gen Insights. I'm sure there are some interesting non-Insights and non-Prius vehicles in there and I'd like to gawk over the results. I'm seeing last years results, am I looking in the wrong place or are they simply not ready yet?
I'd be inclined to drive my Prizm through the MPG run because I get slightly beyond 25% additional the EPA estimated with no mods and this is without driving slow or going extreme with hypermiling. I can't accurately monitor MPG usage though since the Scangauge won't work with it since it is a 1995 and has the OBD-I interface that doesn't even gather that sort of information but it doesn't blink the code 42 or 47 because of a dangling wiring harness that I'll never fix because my MPG got better when it ripped out and I'm not inclined to replace the sensor as it appears to be rusted firmly in place.
I'm currently thinking about my plans for front aero mods for next years event if I can manage the time off of work to arrive for the MPG challenge. I'm not sure if I can start with prototyping yet though because of the temperatures outside, would a front bumper get above 160 degrees if parked in the sun on a 90 degree day? If not my prototype might be permanent, or could just be a front grille block during the winter.
An MPGuino would instrument your Prizm, and it's cheaper than a ScanGauge.
Thanks for that, I looked through the MPGuino page and I assumed it was an OBDII device as well, I didn't know it could be tapped into the speed sensor and injector pulses.
[I figure this is still fairly on topic though and it is already here] "Nope. Not even if it was painted black." How hot does the inside of the car get parked in the sun with no ventilation?
[Removed: Off topic, I'm going to create a new thread]
