So, an opportunity has come up for me to buy a 2000 MT for $1,000. Clean title, no accidents, and original paint. It has about 140,000 miles and the owner says the transmission needs to be replaced, hence the low price. Do you guys think this is a good deal?
He says the IMA battery and car battery are relatively new. He also says the clutch is new. I will be checking out the car this afternoon and will let you know the details.
$1000 a steal of a deal if its just the transmission that needs to be replaced. Check eBay... they are around $400-$700 for used ones depending on the miles on them..
And its not even that hard to replace the trans.

As far as labor is concerned, what should I expect to pay if it is infact just a transmission swap? I have no experience swapping out transmissions and do not want to get ripped off...
If there is anyone from the Bay Area, CA that has experience fixing hybrids and wants to help, I would appreciate it. Maybe we can work out a deal!
when I was shopping around to get my clutch changed (which involves taking out and putting on the trans) I got quotes from $300-$500. I am sure you should be able to find some small shop to be able to do it for around $200-$300. The shops said its about a 3hr job... But in the end, I changed it myself... Its not too bad, even for beginners.
Also, it doesnt have to be any special hybrid shop, as the transmission is a pretty standard Honda transmission, and the procedure is pretty much the same as with any other civic, crx etc...

Thanks for the insight 02insight. Unfortunately the deal did not go through. A local insight owner offered more and the seller couldn't refuse. I got stiffed, but I guess it wasn't meant to be. Apparently the buyer needed to replace his motor and the seller felt that he was more worthy of the car, as I have no experience with these insights. My quest to find a mint insight with HOV stickers continues...
