I had looked at these for a long time and nearly had bought one 5 years ago. After wearing out a Saturn that averaged 44 mpg, then resorting to using my Trailblazer at 20.5 mpg I decided that enough was enough. Enough of paying some oil exec's bonus, enough of paying unfair gas taxes, enough paying into the wild swings of the oil industry. Gas prices, I know, will start going up after the elections and definitely by the summer of '11 and I knew this was the window of opportunity to buy an Insight at a reasonable price.
That being said. My wife's Nissan is big enough to pull the boat or trailer, so I sold my trailblazer and bought a low mileage (15,000 miles) 06 Insight. Now, going to the gas station usually consists of going to the restroom and buying a soda. Once in a while I buy gas and when I do, it's around $24.00 instead of the $60.00 twice a week like I used to. I've had several Honda's in my life and they have always been great vehicles. I knew that was a brand I was going to buy. Personally, I don't care about it being a "green' vehicle. If you lived in northern Wisconsin for one winter you would want global warming to occur on a large scale. For me, it's all about the savings and not dumping a paycheck into the gas tank

I have the 2001 Insight. Gas mileage was the highest of any production car at the time and was the most attractive element for purchasing the car.
Second, safety. 4 out of 5 star rating.
Third, Honda has an excellent reputation for quality cars. Insight will last for well over 300,000 miles if properly maintained.
The Insight has been the best car I've ever bought. The purchase price was paid for in gas savings costs alone at about 50,000 miles over my last car. It's like getting a free car.
It is the most fuel efficient car ever mass produced. When flogging the car on the street, the worst 2 tanks have been 47 and 48 mpg! Always in the mid 50's driving it close to like a normal car (other than lean burn) and always have the AC running (econ mode, but hey, this is south Florida, it is HOT here most of the year).
I don't like paying money to the gas companies, including the foreign countries who take our money and then try to take us out. Seems a little silly to keep feeding that beast.
The technology is great. Lightweight (under 1900 lbs), aluminum, similar construction techniques and philosophy to the NSX. Hard to believe Honda didn't lose money on every one of these!!
Finally, behind the wheel, it feels almost like a sports car. Lightweight, decent power (if you work the shifter), power steering/windows/locks, etc and fun to throw around a little. It is more fun to drive a slow car fast than a fast car slow.
Regards,
Jerry

Actually, with the high tech NSX constuction and cutting edge hybrid system and computers, magnesium engine and trans parts, it cost Honda $50-75,000 to produce each car.
We really bought the Insights at bargain basement prices.
Honda beat all other auto companies in hybrid technology at the time the Insight was introduced for sale in late 1999(2000 Insight model).
For me it is mostly about fuel economy for financial, environmental, and political reasons.
I was more recently driven toward the Insight by the recent oil spill in the Gulf. I recognize my fault in contributing to the demand for oil and want to diminish that as much as is practical.
Having the stage thus set, when I found a decent deal on Craigslist, I brought it home.
Since buying the Insight I have enjoyed it's semi-sporty handling, marveled at the engineering that went in to it, and enjoyed chasing the FCD to ever-higher numbers.
