As I understand, this has nothing to do with production of the Insight, which has sold well enough in Japan. Nor are they discontinuing sales of these hybrids in Canada, they're just not going to stock them at every (or any) dealership due to abysmal sales in Canada.

No surprise here:

Lines stolen directly from the Prius
no compelling reason to purchase that car over a Prius as the mileage isn't better, less room, new design not proven. The only thing it tried to have was a price a bit less but that didn't happen so why? I LOVE Honda's but I would definitely buy a Prius over the I2 if were going the Hybrid route. Just for my own curiosity I checked out the I2 and was thoroughly let down. Anytime the differentiation of a product is based solely price it will lose, hence the lack of surprise here

Really surprised here:

With all due respect, Price was not a major factor in my purchase of my I2. I had already saved to pay cash for whatever I bought.

These were:

1. Styling: If one were to look at the first years of Prius production one would find a very standard looking sedan body style. It was in 2004 I believe that the Prius changed to body lines very reminiscent of an First Gen Insight. Granted, aerodynamics dictate much of this shape. To my eye the 2010 Prius body lines are horrendous. They remind me of the old guy with his pants pulled up around his armpits. I prefer the earlier versions much more. But even those have weird 'bumps' all over. If you look at one head on check out the roof line.

2. Ride: I kind of like to 'feel the road'. The I2 can actually be 'fun' to drive. I used to own 2 1976 Triumph TR7s. The I2 is every bit as much fun to drive as they were, even more so.

3. Interior Controls: The I2's controls give me everything I need, where I like to see it. The Prius's center oriented dash just simply doesn't work for me.

4. Technology: "New design"? Really? It is essentially the same CVT design as the first gen Insight and other Honda hybrids. I liked the idea of the IMA over the Prius system. After reading the service manual I am even more convinced.

5. MPG: I use 1/3 of what my last car used for the same driving pattern. When weighing 1 to 4, a little more on MPG didn't come close.

Less than spectacular advertising, falling gas prices and coming on the heals of what may be called the Great Correction at best or Depression II at worst, the introduction could hardly been more poorly timed. The hyperbole in some of the reviews didn't help much either. For me, the I2 is as close to perfect for my use as I could possibly imagine. If it were not for the I2 I'd still be driving my old car because there just isn't anything else out there that has really caught my eye.

Did I mention I really love my I2 , but to each his own.

Can't say I'm all that sad about this really. I attended the Insight unveiling at Honda Center in Anaheim, listened to all the hype, drove a car, and wasn't really impressed. In my opinion it was a travesty for Honda to name the new car "Insight" anyway.

I agree... I liked it back in the day when the Insight name was only for the 1st gens. It was unique to the 1st gen, since it was itself a unique car and still is.

Before, you would be able to talk about an Insight, and people would be "oh that cool little futuristic car which gets super mpg..",.. but now if you talk about an Insight, most people will be like "oh, you mean that other hybrid that was trying to compete with the prius and which barely anyone was buying?"

Default Gen 2 Insight

It seems that Hybrids do not sell in Canada, be they Toyota or Honda.

I also think the CRZ should be the new Insight.

The appeal of the shape/style of the Gen2 has grown for me.

Perhaps Honda might salvage something from this Car, remove all the IMA, fit a manual transmission, a few mods to suspension etc, and sell it as a conventional non-hybrid at a lower price.

I'm a non-believer when it comes to the automatic transmission, give me a manual every time

If it is true, then so be it. I'm just glad that I got mine already. And I'll have it till the day it dies... If that ever happens. Love this car. Too bad there are alot of people out there that can't appreciate a good car when they see one.

My solution to this, around the internet, is to refer to a first-gen as "an Insight" and the second gen as "second gen Insight". Just kind of ignore the second-gen pretender to the name "Insight".
