I already have a 2000 insight with 160k on it with MIMA. I dont know if I should buy another one.
The guy said the o2 sensor and the rear tires need to be replaced.
Hybrid battery hasnt been replaced yet. it also grind from downshifting 3-2-1
How good is this deal?
$600 for used transmission.
Hybrid battery could still last you for years.
$400 for RE92 tires mounted and balanced.
So about $3800 to get it all fixed up, maybe $4100 if you pay to have the trans installed! Or you could probably just drive it as it is and double clutch when down shifting.
Why do you need 2 I guess would be the question. Insights are great, but tech gets better. I don't see these becoming collector's cars if that's your idea. You could fix it and make a small profit I think, but the mileage will scare most people away...even though the engine should last a lot longer.
I'd buy it and put a k20 in it, but a k20 and 6 speed trans will still run at around 5k and up, not to mention the mounts will cost $500 to do the swap...plus you won't be able to get all the readings from the tach unless you swap it with a S2k tach I believe. Probably will want to beef up the suspension while your at it, and before you know it you are 10k deep in a 10 year old car, lol.
That's a great deal if the car is in as good of condition as the ad says it is.
These cars will absolutely be collectors cars, though probably with a niche market. Jay Leno agrees, so that's good enough for me. (Link)
You pretty much can't lose on a sub-$3000 Insight. Even if you have to fix all of the common problems, you'll still end up ahead or at parity, and then you know that you'll get another 100,000 miles out of it without major expenses. I bought Insight #2 for $2500, and have about $4100 total into it now. Even with 450,000 miles, I feel like I got a great deal and I expect at least another 100,000 miles without any major troubles.
I'd call him up and make a down payment right now if 1) I wouldn't feel bad for buying it out from under you, and 2) if it was blue or citrus, and 3) if I realistically had the room.. lol

I wish it was citrus, but citrus on only available in 2000 (I think). My current 00 insight (BetterBattery installed) grinds downshifting 3-2-1 (i just double clutch) as well so I don't really care about transmission issue.

I doubt it will be a collector's car for a very very very long time...by that I'm talking about your son or grandson might eventually make a reasonable profit on it when it is passed down.
It's too early to tell, but the one thing that it really has going for it is the scarcity.
With only just over 17,000 made.. we could see a time here very shortly where there are less than 10,000 of them left on the road. If you read the article, Jay is spot on - they're rare, they're quirky, they get insane gas mileage and was just generally way ahead of it's time.. It's the perfect grouping of traits to make a collectors item. But like I said, it will probably be a niche thing. I suspect they'll continue to depreciate for another 5-10 years before prices start to climb due to the overall rarity.
Maybe by then Insight #2 will be at or close to 1,000,000 miles.

If you don't buy it, I will. I noticed you're in oceanside. So you live pretty close to me. Well worth the 2800, crunchy transmission or not. As long as it's not leaking fluids or has a horrible smell, it sounds like a great buy.

By then there will be hybrids that will finally get better mileage than the insight.
