Default Ima warranty?

On Nov 8th my 2000 green Honda Insight was totaled. I bought in Las Vegas, I live in Southern Calif in 2004 it had 30,000 miles and 13,000 for it. It was really good except for 2000 dollar manual transmison overhaul a few years ago. The IMA battery was changed out around 75,000 miles under warranty in 2007. When it was killed by some Orange County dumb #$% running a red light I had 140,000. I finally received my check last week for $6700 which I had to fight for to get that. Meanwhile all the insights are being sold from out from under me except one in San Diego? A 2001 blue one with with 79000 miles for $8500 out the door with tax and license. However comes to find out it needs a battery. I am sure it is the original no doubt.

The local Honda Dealer states that it does not fall under warranty of eighty thousand miles and eight years. Yet why do I have a letter sent for my vehilce that Honda extended the warranty on 2000-20004 a 15 year or 150,000 which have kept. I offered the guy 5,000 for it staright up, and there is one in Vegas a 2002 Insight with 107,000 miles on it I can get for 6388 cash but with this 8 year and 80,000 mile BS I dont know if I want an Insight. The dealer said the warranty depends on the state it was made. It was made in Japan. I thought the warranty was unilateraly across the board for all 2000-2004 Honada Insight.

If would like to enlighten me on this subject before I starting talking to Ameriacan Honda and buy a Toyota like I had before I would be all ears!

I wonder how many Insight owners have paid for IMA repairs even though the factory warranty was still valid.

Tell your clueless Honda dealer to read service bulletins 06-027, 06-057, and 06-085. These service bulletins extend the IMA warranty for 2000 - 2004 Insights sold in every state in the U.S. to 10 years/157,500 miles. You can download these bulletins as well as lots of other Insight documents and manuals from a link in a sticky topic in one of these forums.

He is refering to the current G2 model Insight warranty, for the current model the warranty does depend on the state that you are in. It is normally 10yr/100K but in extremely hot states (AZ) it drops to 8yr/100K.

This does NOT apply to the G1 Insight battery warranty, like most dealers they are clueless to their own warranty on these cars. You will have to push them to call Honda and get the facts right. Be careful on the 2002 you are looking at, need to find out when the In-Service date is because this will mark the end of your 10 year warranty period.

Service advisers probably claim they don't have a middle name instead of looking at their DL to find it.

When I took my Insight in last week, the adviser had dug up the cost of replacing the battery but I had to give him the TSB number for the 10/150,000. He did at least pull it up and print it out himself.

I've been happy buying older vehicles so far, but at some point I'll buy something from a new car dealer and probably hate myself for dealing with them.

I wish you could just order a car through your favorite mechanic and skip the dealership altogether.
