Need Catalytic Converter and IMA - is it worth it?
I have a 2003 Insight with 180K miles. I'm on the fence on spending roughly $4K to replace a catalytic converter (just replaced one last year) and the IMA. The IMA is no longer charging the 12V, so, I really can't drive it any longer as is. I am going to try and clean the catalytic converter as described in another thread, but, if that does not work - I'll be forced to replace it to pass inspection and drive it legally. I'm reluctant to keep dumping money into this car - my first IMA only lasted 3 years and the second 5 years. Don't want this expense again in another 3-5 years. Anyone have any input?
Check all 4 ground straps in the engine compartment. Bad grounds can cause weird electrical problems even possibly including an incorrect "bad catalytic converter" diagnostic trouble code. Needing to replace the catalytic converters twice within such a short time seems suspicious.
Rather than buying a replacement IMA battery from Honda, you could save some money and get a better battery by buying a … BetterBattery for $2,000 plus shipping. Many Insight owners are installing these themselves, but any good mechanic could do the same for a reasonable cost given a little guidance.

Get a grid charger. Best possible way to save/maintain your battery
