Default CVT Finally Kicked the Bucket - Repair Questions

The CVT on my 2001 Honda Insight finally decided to call it quits in the middle of a cross country road trip yesterday. 205k Miles on the clock and its cooked.

I plan on doing the R&R myself, but does anyone have any suggestions on a shop that will rebuild mine or a good source for used parts? Right now I'm heading the used transmission route since I've heard the rebuilds are more than I paid for my car...

Is the car anywhere close to Santa Fe? If so, we should talk. If not, look at Car-Part.com--Used Auto Parts Market for a used cvt -- the cheapest alternative. Also, in Denver there is adoptapart.com and Eric there has a hybrid shop that runs in parallel with it.

I haven't come cross anyone who has done a CVT rebuild but Majestic Honda - The Internet's #1 Honda Automotive Parts Store has some stuff listed but you'd have to take it apart to find the bad components, I'm hoping the damage is obvious when you pull it open. If you do, please document with a bunch of pictures because I'd like to see the inside and it might help Honda CVT owners if they experience the same problem.

Default Me too

I am curious about the CVT, and hope it is a long time before I have to work on mine. However, if it happens, I would like to repair it myself, so I will keep looking.

Thanks,

Tim

We ended up renting a uhaul truck and trailer to finish up the trip so its back in the garage now. Then plan so far is car-parts.com and swap in a new to me one. I'll probably tear apart the busted one and if I do I'll take pictures

There's generally two things that will happen (this is HCH info):

1. The forward clutch pack burns and the transmission slips. These can generally be rebuilt not too expensively.
2. The CVT belt slips. These, you might as well dump everything out of the case into the scrap bin.

The reason I asked is that mine is making a "Whining" sound that is 1 to 1 of the engine speed. Only in drive not in reverse or neutral. When I put it in drive it is a low growl with pitch directly related to engine speed. accel- decel-coast no change in noise. It is now about 12,000 miles since it started to make the noise. I have changed the the fluid and it was clean and nothing on the magnet I have looked at the fluid and magnet twice during the 12,000 miles and no issues. I am afraid that something bad is going to happen. the car currently has 260,000 miles it is a 2006 and I rely on it for my 200+ mile daily commute

Do you have links to this info? I have an HCH w/CVT problems and would love to learn more. Mine is not noisy but does slip when decelerating.
