$1.20 per liter is cheap U.S. fuel??? (I live in California.)

Big thing with the insight is that miles don't de-value the car much. Put 80k on a lupo and see how much you've lost. Even if it was more efficient than an insight (which in real world, I doubt) it would never make up for the depreciation.
: You trade-in your cars? Huh. I didn't think of that. I apologize. I always drive my cars til their dead to get the maximum value out of them. ~$20,000 initial cost divided by ~400,000 mile lifespan == 5 cents per mile regardless if it's an insight or lupo or polo.

So then I try to find the car with the highest MPG to save on fuel costs. The Lupo 3L is a rare car and held its value, and most owners average 90mpg. Actually to be honest I'd probably buy both: pne gasoline; one diesel. See my sig

There is a nice LHD silver one in Germany for 7999 Euros. They have had this for a little while. Only 129K kms.

It has the Euro spec adjustable headlights and rear fogs, as well as rear parking sensors.

When Jamie Kitman ran a long term Insight for Car magazine in 2001, he ended with a drive across America by Prius Gen 1, Insight, and Lupo 3l. Up till then he'd loved the Insight, but he reckoned that for serious transcontinental travel the Lupo was the way to go. That particular Lupo probably did have a/c though!
