Yep, I did check those, they were already nice and tight. I did driving test, and can confirm my fix worked really well, no more rattling noise.

Can the root cause be a worn out latch that just doesn't hold the door as tight anymore? The car is 2001 model, and 209k miles now.

Consequently, I noticed the VIN is 299, whoo, 299th car made in 2001!
2004 HCH1 182K (was 180k), 2001 I1 213K (was 208k), tooting around bay area, CA

I wound up removing the latch from the car, not the part on the hatch, and then removing some of the shims. I think it lowered the latch enough that it doesn't do that anymore.
