I have only had my car for 5 days. It's a 2000 with 32K miles on it. It has the Sumitomo tires 175/65/R14. I have nothing to base a comparison, but I checked their pressure and they were at 48lbs. I think they have a fairly rough ride, but I expected it to be that way. Since I purchased the car from a used car dealer, I wan't able to talk to the previous owner (yet).
I drive 49 miles each way to work from Spartanburg SC to Near Charlotte NC on Interstate 85. There are some very long grades, and almost nowhere is it flat, but I am experimenting with driving styles and mileage.
I was able to get 72.3mpg by driving carefully trying to run 55, but on the long grades ending up around 49-50. I would downshift on some of the other grades when the FCM would drop from 75 to less than 50. I don't know if I'm doing it right, but it seems like I am not sacrificing as much that way. If I speed up to 60, the mileage drops about 4 or 5 mpg and if I go to 65, it drops to 59-60. Going 55 adds about 7 minutes to my commute.
Maybe there is someone near that might want to trade wheels for a week or two to do a direct comparison.

Yea I know. The lowest so far is like 356 including shipping that a guy mention above. It was 80 per tire plust like 35 for shipping if my math works out. Either way this is not 45-50 that some people were discussing. Oh well if anyone finds them any cheaper let me know.
RE92's are worth $80-100/tire installed, BUT, the fuel economy bonus they give over ANY OTHER TIRE makes it more than worth the extra $100-200 over the long run.
To put any other kind of tire on thinking you're saving money is nothing but shortsighted.
If you want to put other tires on for a softer, smoother ride, or more cornering grip, or some other reason, then fine. Just don't think you're going to save money by doing it.

Actually, the above poster was probably correct when it was posted...nearly 8 years ago.

What would you do:
Dealer quotes:
"We sell the Bridgestone Potenza165-65/R14 RE92 "low rolling resistance" tire for your Insight. These tires are designed to give your Insight the best gas mileage.
The tires are $109.00 each. With tax, mounting, balancing and Calif. disposal fees each tire would be $142.00.
These tires are available now and also come with a 1 year or 12,000 limited road hazard warranty."
Wheel Works quoted $90.99 per tire. I don't have my notes on what the total per tire would be in the end.
I've used both places for years with my CRX and another car at Wheel Works, too. I'm inclined to think that the additional $80 for the 4 tires charged by the dealer would be worth it for their experience with Insights.
I'd try to work a 'long time customer' discount with both of them. This would be the first work since I purchased it recently.

Firestone tire centers will usually match Costco's sale price. So if Costco isn't convenient or you're not a member, check your closest Firestone tire center.
