Default The BIG Batteries...IS IT TIME ??

I've just passed 70,000 miles on my 2001 Insight. It drives great, and got 67 MPG going from Dallas, TX to Memphis, TN. It cost me a little over $15 to fill it up....I got 71 MPG coming back!

I thought this was pretty good considering the car is an automatic. I was averaging about 60 mph (No rush of course)

But, anyway, replacing the BIG battery cells stays on my mine constantly. Am I coming up to the point where they need replacing? The car is running fantastic.

The big question I need to know is: Are the prices coming down to replace these now (compared to a year ago or so)? And what seems to be a good going price for these? Is it best to have the dealership install this stuff?

Thanks for any feedback.

There have been numerous posts in this regard, try the forum search feature.

And for more than you probably want to know about the IMA system see:

Prices have come down since Sept. 02 when the quote I recieved before my purchase was $2900.00. Last Sept. a member in here had theirs done for $2100.00, installed.

The bottom line seems to be: "If they ain't broke, don't fix 'em". That is, there's really no way to predict when they'll fail - some people are going well past 100K - and no point to replacing them until you get trouble displays on the dash.

So take the $2100 and stick in an interest-bearin account or something 'til you need it

Default Maybe ...

Interest-bearing account? Great idea, but for what...1-2% interest rate?
I would rather take my chances in YOUR home state and let it ride on the black jack table/craps table....

OK, a good mutual fund - now's a good time to buy. But if you'd rather send it to Nevada... well, just mail it to me I'll send you some free drinks in return, and you won't have to breathe the cigarette smoke

The trailings of this thread are a better fit for the Buy / Sell forum, NOT. :P And remember such "dealings" need to be completed off site via email :P
