Default Anyone have an old iPod?

I know it's not supported, but are there any tricks to at least get the USB plug to charge and possibly play (but not have the stereo control) an old iPod? I plugged in my 3rd gen (that's the one that was the first to work on both mac and windows) and it just said USB no data, and the iPod didn't charge. I know I can just use an audio cable to plug it into the stereo, but it would be nice to have the car charge it.

Any thoughts? See, this is what you get for being an early adopter of technology, lol.

Don't know what generation it is, but my wife's old pre-video iPod doesn't work either. Dragging the iTunes folder over to a $19 jump drive works great. My two or three year old iPod Classic works well also.

i have a first gen video and it works perfectly.
Like mentioned above, you can copy the files to a flash drive and it will work the same.

That would beat hauling around the iPod. Do you need to export the library, or just copy as-is? This will maintain playlists intact, I assume? Any idea what size flash drive is needed for any particular iPod memory?

The best part is that m iPhone could then stay in my pocket where it belongs!

You can copy the library as is right off the hard drive. I knew that mine wouldn't fit on my flash drive so I selected some of my favorite artists and copied those folders. The playlist are part of the iPod info that I didn't copy. I don't think the radio reads those but get the info on play lists through the iPod since when you plug it in the radio starts with the last song played out of the car.

D'oh. I have a 4th Gen ipod specifically for the car. Looks like it won't work either. Guess I have to find a cheap 5th Gen on craigslist or ebay later.

Here's the list of compatible models from the manual:
iPod Classic 5th Gen. (2005 or later)
iPod Classic (2007 or later)
iPod nano
iPod nano 2nd generation
iPod nano 3rd generation
iPod touch
iPhone

Yeah, I had an old 60GB photo that didn't work (UNSUPPORTED VER message). I picked up a new 120GB Classic from Costco and have achieved iPod integration heaven.

I have a second generation Nano and it did not work originally. However I updated the software through Itunes and then it worked. However, I just bought a 32G flash drive and put all my music on that and it works great. I just leave it in the car all the time.

I had tried copying some stuff to a USB drive, but got several "Unplayable file" or something similar. I need to try it again. How did you format the USB drive - FAT32?

All of my music was in WMA format and I just copied and pasted it onto the flash drive.
