Still, with all of the performance monitoring I doubt there is much improvement to be had. Without a dyno it would be really difficult to find the difference from all of the other factors in play from air temp to tire pressure.
Most piston engine aircraft engines have had duel spark plugs per cylinder for years, both as a safety factor in having two independent ignition systems running and also for increasing efficiency of the combustion.

In fact, part of the normal pre-flight test of the aircraft is (with the engine running) to alternately switch to each ignition system to test it, before finally switching to the normal mode of running both concurrently.

If I remember correctly with the Cessnas I used to fly, when switching the ignition system to duel mode, the cruising engine speed would pick up about 100 RPM. Not an insignificant amount to be sure, but in remembering this experience, I agree with you it would be hard to imagine there could be significantly "more" power to be had ostensibly by making combustion even more efficient than the TWO sparkplugs per cylinder can already provide.

[QUOTE=Purplegate;154944]This is interesting !

But for the spark plug, they have no choice in the drop down menu for the Insight. I sent a mail to ask... Anybody know if these spark plugs would be an issue (waranty...) for Honda ?

Over on the Fit forums several owners have complained about the integral spark plug capacitor units failing and they cost $100 bucks each instead of $5. I had one fail also and can verify the $100.
Worse, I can't find any real advantage for the integral units over the elctronic distributor and spark plug set up on the dyno either.

Wow. I didn't even know the Insight had 8 spark plugs. That is news to me, in fact I had to go google it just to make sure. I guess I've never noticed the few times I've looked under the hood.

Drawing from HCH experience, Honda seems to use costly iridium spark plugs already. There are various google-searchable threads on this topic... here's one: Pulstar plug discussion at greenhybrid.com
