Default Road tax!

Since the forum consists of members from around the world (er....almost, but getting there!) it would be interesting to see how much people -in different countries- pay for road tax per year for their I2.
In Greece, I paid 3€ for road tax (roughly 3$) since hybrids < 1929cc are excluded from road tax.
(starting salary of inexperienced worker in Greece roughly 650€ or 650$)

Elsewhere?

I just paid $200 to my town for my 2010 excise tax. Although, I believe when I file taxes I get that back? I'm a little bit confused on the 2009 new car purchase tax breaks.

Until the 31st of December 2009 I pay € 100,- per year ($150). From the 1st of January 2010 onward I don't have to pay any roadtax as Hybrids are exempt.

That is....until 2012 when we are going to be charged road tax by the Km. So if you drive more you pay more. Hybrid owners probably have to pay less per Km, or will be exempt, depending on how much money the goverment needs .

How on earth will they calculate that?

Forgot to add that I pay based on the calculated value of the car (which was for some reason $10,000 on the paper I got - I really hope it hasn't depreciated that much already, lol!). It was something like you pay some value per every $1,000 the car is worth.

OK. Brace yourself. They will put a GPS tracking device in every car. The device records where your drive, how fast and at what time.

The congestion problem in my country is really big. Mainly because environmentalists and strict EU laws prohibit the building of 8 lane highways.
(Highways are too close to residential areas)

So the clever Christian party (how secular our government is...NOT), decided to tackle this by charging 7 eurocents/Km during rush hour as to prevent people from driving during these hours. And sucking dry the people who need to because they have to get to their jobs.

Suffice it to say, I am not of fan of this. Don't even get me started about the whole "big brother" thing.

Seriously?!? That is so creepy! Has there been much protest about that?

Wouldn't it be much more cost effective to just have the car milage be noted at your yearly inspection and have that sent to the government?

Maybe you got 50% off because it's a hybrid vehicle? Or doesn't it work like that. Since the Insight is about $20,000....

My friend (who lives in my same town) also got a really low number on her new 2010 Volvo. So I guess they don't discriminate in their incorrect math.

Well, not enough in my opinion. People have become very tame over here and somehow my government is very good at selling crazy ideas lately.

During this recession, all people think about is their wallet. And they say that for regular car users who don't drive more than 30,000K (roughly 20,000 miles), this new regulation will be cheaper annually.
Mind you, non-hybrid drivers pay between 500-1000 euros road tax each year. That's what causes all the jealous looks on the road .

What people don't realize is that it will cost a fortune to outfit each car with a GPS box and maintain the whole tracking system. Of course it will create a lot of extra jobs....but still. Sounds very similar to what Obama is doing to "create" jobs with the whole renewable energy BS.
I am not right-winged at all by the way, but it all reeks of communism if you ask me .
