What I don't get is that all of these articles are always the same exact re-hash and when it comes to the Prius bashing on the Insight and they ALWAYS neglect to mention that many people are successful in buying an Insight at or near dealer invoice while people buying a Prius are stuck at MSRP or above.
I just met with a guy recently who went to buy a Prius and the dealer wanted a $3500 premium ABOVE the MSRP sticker!
Funny how these articles ALWAYS neglect to mention things like this.
If I can buy a nicely equipped Insight EX for under $23,000 out the door and a Prius III can cost me maybe $30,000 to $31,000 out the door... that $7,000 or $8,000 difference can buy a LOT OF GAS.
How do we get these authors to stop not mentioning these facts?
All of the articles make the Insight as it's a very poor choice compared to a Prius, when it fact, it's not. They also neglect to talk about how many people achive over 45-55 MPG with these cars while I have a family member who has a Prius that gets about 47-49 MPG on the highway. All they keep talking about is the 40/43 EPA ratings.
When I'm at 55 MPH with the cruise control on, I often average 53-56 MPG.
Sales for the Insight would drastically improve if the public would just get the facts straight! How can we make this happen?
I wish all of the people researching to buy one of these two cars would find our posts.
I have pretty much given up on the media reporting anything worthwhile anymore. I guess I'll just take comfort in the fact that I got a car that gets Prius-like mileage for thousands less (and it has a better dash layout, and styling, and reliability, and less social stigma, and I'm not following the herd, etc. etc. etc.)
However, just once, when gas prices go back up I want a news crew to come up to me at a gas station to get my opinion of the high gas prices... It'd be great!!

I voted with my wallet. I don't care what the general public or the media thinks about my car. As long as I am satisfied with my purchase, that is the bottom line.

I care because I want the car to be popular and always have cheap parts for it.
When I start to compare the complexity of the drive-train and the battery capacity between Insight and Prius, not to mention the price difference, I do think Insight is the most practical and affordable Hybrid ever

It's not really affordable, I would say. Look at all of the people who earn $8-12/hr. A $20k+ car is not affordable for that kind of income. Even when I used to earn $30-40k, $20k was an insane price to pay for a car. The only reason I paid this kind of money is because I came into a large sum of money and put almost $10k down on this car. So in essence, buying this car was almost like buying a $13,500 car for me.
But as far as the complexity and stuff and for the MPG that you get for the dollar, the Prius is the winner. I'm also amazed at how well the car handles for being a Hybrid. I have no problem taking hard turns in this car.

I hope I didn't leave you the impression that I said the word "afforable" too easy. I2 is my first new car purchase and I saved up for a long time for that.
By practical and affordable, I was comparing Insight to Prius, Fusion....such as such. I know it's not an apple to apple comparison but based on my budget, driving habit...etc. Yes, Insight it isn't the best at performance, but definitely is one of the hybrid out there that has the best performance-to-cost hybrid.

None of those cars affordable. It boils my blood how these car makers make out like a $20-30k car is no big deal.
For the most part, I am making the same money (or less) than I was making in 1996-1997 and many of the people I know are in the same boat. I wouldn't even think of spending $23-30k on a car back then.
Car makers should be making $12-15k hybrid cars. I thought back in 2005 that Hyundai was going to make a cheap one? How come they never came through?

I would have to agree.
Even though I make plenty of money to be able to afford a car that costs much more, I prefer to spend less than $20K on a car. I mean really, if a car CAN cost as little as $10k brand new (Hyundai) then why on earth would someone spend over twice that for a car. It pained me to pay what I did for my Insight, but I wanted a new car for the first time in my life and I have a rule that I must always get a more fuel efficient car than what I am getting rid of. So for me the $2000 premium for the Prius was a no-go.
It just doesn't make sense to me... And then you get into the cars that are $50k or more for something that isn't that special (BMW, Mercedes, Cadillac, etc.) I just can't comprehend buying something like that even if you have the money. Maybe its just the way I was raised.... Maybe its just that I put more value into my money than other people... I don't know
