Willie
No offense to you Willie, you dont sound like someone in that group.
Brakes are the most powerful part of a vehicle? If thats the case why do they have run off areas on mountains? Do brakes fade if you ride them trying to stop your vehicle? Anyone pressed both petals tothe floor while at highway speeds to see what really would of happened?

...The prius is a little different. The "key" just has to be on the person I believe and you press a start button, but you still should be able to shut it down. Maybe hold the button longer or something?
Anyway, this was on the national news so Toyota cannot be happy. At this point someone could stick thier foot on the accelerator and another foot on the brake and "claim" the car was moving on its own. It wouldn't be ethical but how can you tell for certain whether it is the car's fault or the driver
I don't drive a Prius, so I couldn't verify this myself, but there is supposed to 2 ways to kill the engine : hold the start button for 5 seconds, or press rapidly 3 times. This is said to be the failsafe. Also, there is supposed to be a "fool safe" system that kills the engine if you press the gas and brake at the same time. (again, just read about it, not tried mysefl).
I like what they say : If the reports of acceleration continue (and the smart pedals work properly), then there will be nothing and no one left to blame but the driver

May be you just didn't know, but with your 53LMPG with an I2, you are already a decent hypermiler
Errr.... I abuse rental cars and when brakes fade, thats a sick feeling to floor the brake petal and you feel no slowing and have to revert to engine braking. I even had this on my 240d one busy day.
Try this with the i2. Go 40mph and slam on the brakes, I bet you can trigger abs by feeling like a tatoo gun on the bottom of the brake petal. Try going 80 and slam on the brakes, of course in a safe area. Notice how below 40 it seemed to keep rolling where as before it almost stopped on a dime? Thats fade and this car will dafe out as I have posted months ago when I drove it like I stole it autocrossing to work one day.
As for the story on prius chat, it looks like a news article written by 7 different people. I have driven through NOVA and they do a minium of 90 mph. I had my insight to 98, but was still being passed. Although it was fun, I opted to draft a semi doing 70 on the far right. I can see the confusion the driver had withteh run a way prius on rather to brake itor keep up with the flow of traffic. If the brakes were fading and the car was going 110% acceleration, its likely he could maintain a safe speed to control the car vs bring it to a stop.
Of all the run away stories, his sounds like the most believable next to people running into fixed objects. If you got an econ car loose, it cant go but so fast and with working brakes, it seems easily plausable to keep it under control, but not stop it.
Ive driven an 09 camry and my scion xb 09 model had the camry engine and 4 speed tranny. Yeah, that thing could kill you 0-70 in like 7 seconds. Top speed lime 127mph.
Honestly, the more I read about Prius SUA the more suspicious I get of the claims. There seems to be one other factor that is common amongst them and that is the drivers are 50+ years old. The vast majority of the SUA claims against Audi in the 1980's were made by drivers 60+ years old.

According to the Car and Driver article linked in this thread, the 'Turn it off' section says that frantic pressing didn't turn off the Toyota Camry, but required a 3.3 second button press.
"Furthermore, short, frantic pressing of the Toyota’s start/stop button—the probable response in an emergency—does nothing, whereas the Infiniti kills the engine after three rapid-fire presses."
