Default 10k mile service

Sorry if this is a repost, only found similar but not same threads on this.

So my odometer just hit 10k miles. The first service I did was when the car was at 5k miles and it cost 90$ just to rotate tires and change oil at the dealer.

I am not particularly good with car stuff myself, but what if I brought it to some other place to service? Like a jiffy lube or something...
Are there usually any benefits? or consequences, such as the resale value of the car is less because I did not get the oil changed/ tire rotated at the official honda dealership?

Or would it be better to buy my own oil and bring it to the dealership to have them change it? (What kind of oil is best for a change?) How much did it cost you guys, and what things usually have to be serviced in the honda insight at 10k miles?

Thanks!

Until the car gets really old I would stick to the Honda delership, yes it's a bit more but seriously the people at those jiffy jubes just suck. Look around for a Mobile One oil change station, there are few in Texas (don't know about elsewhere) and they do great service and use their quality brand oil. OR change the oil yourself, there's is an extra step in doing this by removing a metal cover but it's all easy from there. My Insight is still brand new so havn't gone though the oil change yet. If you are going to do it just buy the recommended Honda oil. OR buy the expensive Mobil oil. I say this because oil matters a lot, and I've been doing this with my last two honda's and have gotten past the 200,000 mile range so it'll pay you back... Tire rotation is impossible to do yourself without special lift, I guess you could have anyone do that.

I would not trust an I2 to any of the quick lube places - not with 3 different types of fasteners for the belly pan and an uncommon oil spec. You can always ask the dealer about bringing your own oil. I would be surprised if they went for it - but it never hurts to ask. If you don't get anywhere with the dealer, you might try to find an independent mechanic who will let you bring your own oil.

That price seems high and that service seems too soon. My wife's car did not get the first oil change until there was 20% oil life left at 10,450 miles on the car. They rotated the tires and I paid about $54 including tax.

I personally wouldn't take it to a quick-lube place, as I've heard too many stories from friends and neighbors about loose oil drain plugs, over-filling, under-filling, etc.

Whatever you do, if you decide to go outside of Honda's dealerships to get service, SAVE YOUR RECEIPTS. Even if you perform your own oil changes, make sure you keep your receipts for the oil/filter in case warranty work is required.

My honda dealer says to perform oil changes when the MID reaches 5%. I just had my 1st oil change performed right around 11k miles.

I just my second oil change and first tire rotation at the dealer - only cost me $54. Discount Tire does tire rotation for free, but then you are waiting at two different places.

Our local Jiffy Lube is run by a small businessman who has a responsible adult attitude toward the running of his business. His under the car guy and customer contact/shift leader guys are always task focused. He provides employment for high school guys and provides them training and task focus.

I've been goin to him for years with my Saturn, but the I2 is abit complicated and unusual for draining the oil, and requires 0-20 oil, which is very hard to get. So I've been taking it to the dealer. I talked to the service advisor about saving money. He sent me to Walmart to get Mobil 1 0-30 after discussion regarding alternatives to the high priced Honda oil. Inaddition to oil change and tire rotation they also do a battery check, inside/outside car wash and hock-up to their electronic troubleshooting gizmo, for a price similar to the lower numbers quoted above.

Mike, just to let you know (might be useful for nexts oil changes), the I2 is very well made to perform the oil change. The belly cover is a bit annoying, but easy to remove, then everything is very accessible. Any pops shop should nnot have any problem changing the oil, if they have the proper 0w20. That could be where they struggle... Where they might be puzzled though is to reset the MID, there is a procedure, but Honda will take their scanner to do so. That's probably what you saw when you say "they connected their troubleshooting gizmo".

Mobil 1, or similar synthetic will cost roughly $25-$28 for the 4 qt (dealers might have a slightly better price). At $50, you pay the guy $25-$30 to do the job, which is not too bad. Over that price, somebody is working at a quite expensive hourly rate...

If your dealer made it for $54, you are in the range. Sometime, I feel they exagerate though. On my last service, the car flagged a B1 (which has barely more than A1...) and they wanted over $100, for just a bunch of visual check. If you don't know much about cars and cannot check things yourself, it's ok to have them check everything, you will remain safe, but your I2 is still quite new at 10K miles, or ever 20K miles when you will go for your next service and is most likely to have nothing wrong. The possibility that your car has a problem is still there, so they will find it, but chances are low...

ok so i checked the mid, it says oil life 60%. should i wait til like 12,500 miles til i change it? any risk with doing that?

how much does the dealer charge to change the oil if i provide the oil?

also, when i called in, the dealer quoted me $59 for the oil change, another dealer i called in quoted $64, but anyways, after i went to the dealer they charged me extra to rotate the tires too, it ended up being $89-$90 so ya...

HybridforCollege: When I bought my first new car in 1996 I was told by several mechanics that the best preventative maintence is to frequently change the oil - keeping it clean. I followed the car's manual and changed the oil and filter every 3000 miles. The I2 manual says the "oil life" % refers to the oils' viscosity and changing it is not required till it reads 0-10% (or something like that.)

I checked the oil on my new I2 when it had around 3000 miles on it, and like prior cars the oil was brown in color. For long term life of the engine I want oil that is clear or light green in color, rather than black with adequate viscosity. One's budjet and intent to keep vs sell the car sooner vs later I think are crucial in preventative maitainence and repair decisions!
