I leanred early on the least assist you use the better fuel economy get. Second, you need to regen to ensure you got power if needed to merge. What I do is give just bit more gas than needed to keep the speed limit and coast down to recharge. I know it is hard to see in the video, but I am going up to 60, then coasting down to 55 or 50. This I also refer to as lifting freqently.
55 or less in the center lane, with a video camera? Lucky to be alive to tell the story! But seriously, I am wondering what would happen to your mileage if you drafted that semi for a while.
That recharge on the video was without using the brakes? So far I've only gotten the charging needle that low by slightly dragging the brakes while coasting.
This was at 1130 at night and traffic had stablize at this point. I was just holding vs really filming as I would look down, adjust the camera, then it drifted from what I wanted to film. I film what I safely can and repeatable.
Yeah, just lifting off the gas petal it dips into regen. I have seen it peg the regen meter with just lifting. Othertimes I have braked and it just goes a few bars.

First, let me apologize for my poor attempt at humor a few posts ago. But, I did once draft a semi while driving a VW camper with a trailer going west on I 70 approaching Denver. It's uphill for miles and miles. The VW went from 40 mph in 3rd gear up to 50 mph in 4th gear. No "lifting" in that bus! But, NOT a good idea at all!
With <800 miles on my Insight, it tells me I am getting around 43-48 mpg with out hypermiling. That is what I really like about the car. Just drive it like any 1300 cc automatic car (ie, sometimes drive the crxdfuy out of it) and it gives great mileage, as well as the tightest feel of any lightweight car I have ever had. Call me crazy, but I really like the CVT.
I am looking forward to my annual June trip into the NY Finger lakes area - 350 miles each way. I'll try it both ways - 75-80 on cruise and then a bit slower on another leg of the trip. But Econ will be on all the time. Crusing with Econ off at that speed results in too many rpm uphill. Too bad you can't set the cruise control for a specific MPG instead of MPH.
Too bad you can't set the cruise control for a specific MPG instead of MPH.
I've thought about this so much in the past year. It would be awesome to have the cruise set at >50mpg. That way, once you got going, it could handle the hills accordingly. I'd love it.
It'd probably piss the hell out of people behind you though.
