I testdrove 3 different Civic Hybrids (one CVT, two manuals) and none of them had a problem revving to redline in 1st or 2nd gear. Went zero to 60 just as quickly as my 2 seat insight.

The Insight-2 has the same engine as that first Civic hybrid and should have similar performance

Lets keep in mind one has VTEC the other has i-VTEC and I-Dsi.

My understanding of the Civic Hybrid (1st and 2nd gen) is that it has 3 modes. The "normal" combustion mode, the "light" cruise mode which turns-off some cylinders, and a high airflow mode called VTEC (above ~2800 rpm) for extra power. I've certainly never noticed any lack of power in the CH as it zips to redline in 1st/2nd gears.

The 4-seat insight has the same engine so it should have the same modes, unless Honda made alterations to its camshaft & how it operates.

The engine in the civic and the insight are diferent in many ways. Look up l13a as that is our engine model. We have i-Dsi and Pause i-VTEC

At least the first gen Civic Hybrid, it just has the basic VTEC system and it's only used to close the valves when coasting. It just doesn't pull that hard, even at 4k rpms... I can feel a huge difference in VTEC mode in the I1, but sadly, nothing on the HCH1.

No cylinder deactivation while fuel is being burned either.

From Wikipedia:
Quote:
1.3-litre single overhead cam i-DSI lean-burn internal-combustion engine with VTEC Cylinder Cut-off System, which allows three cylinders to deactivate during deceleration. The engine generates 85 hp (63 kW) at 5,700 rpm and 87 ft·lb (118 N·m) of torque at 3300 rpm.
And:
Quote:
The VTEC cylinder idling system of the engine closes the valves in three of the four cylinders when the car is decelerating, reduces the power lost to the engine by 50 percent and allows the IMA to extract more electrical energy during braking. The rocker arms operating the intake and exhaust valves have two modes: valve-lift mode or idle mode. They are engaged via a synchronizing piston. During deceleration, the synchro piston disengages the lift-mode rocker arm so that the valves remain at rest, effectively sealing off the cylinder.

The i2 has several things goin against it for low speed. Its torque peaks about 4700 rpms and the IMA is subject to SOC on what it will do. You got the cvt trying to compute its ratio and you got the i_dsi retarding the timing to -17 degrees. Then if it isn't a smooth transition you trigger trac control and that haults everything.

We really need a clutch so you can rev it to about 3 grand before you start to release the clutch.
