This is my first post. I've had my Insight for almost two weeks now. I traded in a 2010 Dodge Ram Quad Cab with a Hemi for my new 2010 Honda Insight EX! I was getting 15 mpg and spending $600 on gas a month! Now i'm getting an amazing 50 mpg so far! I've only put gas in it twice since i've had it!

Wow... you were spending 600/mo in gas? You're going to save enough in gas money to cover your Insight car payment.

Welcome to the forum. I was pumped about saving $100/month on gas. Then my wife decided she wanted a Prius, saved another $100/month on gas. That $200 is $10 shy of my Insight payment. I love hybrids. Apparently, you are saving enough to go out and buy yourself a second car.

Jedi I also was in the same boat, fuel for the month is about $500, the difference is paying my payment and most of the fuel!!! Family loves the INsight too!!!

Don't forget to go to fuelly.com and track your fuel and mpg, it is the best!!!!

Hi There! I am also looking to buy a hybrid car but I am coming from driving a Toyota Tercel that gets me 39/MPG no matter how I seem to drive it and not a German car. I am finding that the hybrid cars are really the only ones that can compare with my current mileage. I am a little concerned about future repairs though. What could I expect out of a hybrid for repairs? I did find a local garage that is certified and specializes in hybrid cars so I know there is a place to work on it nearby, but the cost is $100/hr for labor. I currently change my own oil, air filter, and spark plugs, and do little maintenance stuff on my Tercel....can do it yourselfers who are not engineers work on these cars? Just curious, since the low cost to own is mentioned here. I noticed other links about where to buy certain parts and some photos even of someone doing their own brake job.

You should be fine. There's really nothing you can do with hybrid battery system. The best thing that you could do now would be to research the various hybrids, pick a hybrid technology that fits your needs, and then narrow it down to a certain car. Perhaps you should be open to non-hybrid technology as you research, for instance seeing how a Corolla or Civic match up to your needs vs. a hybrid.
