Just got a 2011 Insight LX and love everything about it, except......
Living in the desert, we use air conditioning over six months a year. In the middle of the summer, it gets over 110 degrees outside. I was running my a/c on the way home from work yesterday and came to a traffic light and stopped. To my surprise, the auto stop feature engaged, the engine shut off and the a/c immediately started blowing hot air. This will be unbearable in the middle of summer!
Is there a way to prevent Auto stop from engaging when I have the a/c on?
Auto stop functions with Econ on or off. It also functions with A/C set on Auto or manual. I can't find a way to tell the car NOT to shut the engine down when stopped with the A/C on.

Even with the temp turned all the way down?
If the climate control senses the car is cool enough it should allow the auto stop to engage but the ICE should start again if it gets too hot, i.e. if you have the temp set to 68 and the internal temp is at 68-69 the auto stop will engage but if the temperature rises quickly to 75-80 the ICE should start again.
If the car still auto stops (or at least if it stops for an extended period of time) with the Econ off, AC on, Climate Control set to auto, temperature control turned to max low and the actual internal temperature noticeably hotter than it should be I would say you have a problem with your car and should get it checked out.
I don't have an Insight yet, but did go on a test drive yesterday. I loved the car, and have placed an order. My Honda guy is looking, but it may take some doing... anyway.... I'm a retired pilot and being the stupid idiot I am, I wanted to know how to prevent the car from doing the Auto-Stop thing at the lights, because I live in Florida and want the air on too. The Honda guy said to take my foot off the brake and it would start up... when it became obvious it was going to roll, I used the handbrake to maintain position until the light changed... not too high-tech, but it worked and you don't have to get involved shifting or mashing buttons... just another of many options to keep the air on.
Yes, shifting into S will cancel auto stop. Also, with ECON OFF the climate control prioritizes cabin comfort, so idle stop shouldn't last very long. We haven't had any hot days here yet to really test it out though.
First off, thanks everyone who has already offered input. I can already tell that this is a great forum, with great members.
I drove around quite a bit today with Econo OFF, A/C on auto, set at 75 degrees. It's about 82 degrees outside and I the auto stop never shut the engine off at a stop. It appears that the computer is smart enough to know that it's warmer outside (as previous poster commented) than inside the vehicle and that it shouldn't shut the engine down?
Anyways, maybe I was jumping the gun on this concern. If the computer doesn't shut the car off at a stop a majority of the time with the A/C on, I am a happy camper
I'd still be interested in hearing anyone elses experience with A/C in a very hot climate and whether or not you ever experience auto stop in the heat?
