I was wondering if anyone notices that their engine makes ticking sounds? I can only hear it when outside of the car. It starts right after start up and then about 30 second later a second tapping sound starts.
There is no change even if it has been warmed up after a 30 minute drive. I saw a post on the first gen forum that Honda uses short piston skirts so that causes a lot of noise from piston slap.
First oil change was at 4k by the dealer. They used Mobil1 0/20W and stock Honda filter. I just changed the oil with Mobil1 0/20W and a Fram Tough Guard filter and there has been no change in the noise.
Not sure if I am being paranoid. I am taking it to the dealer tomorrow morning. I will post an update after they take a look at it.
I noticed what you are talking about. I asked somebody else and they didn't think it was piston slap but the injectors as well.
edit: I have a F22B in my Odyssey that has some pretty intense piston slap. The two sounds are very distinct. The Insight just has this moderately loud ticking noise with the hood open. The F22B sounds like a piston wants to come out the side of the block, but it dies down after it warms up.

I feel better knowing that someone else thinks the ticking sound is normal. I have never had a car that ticked like this. I guess I was kind of paranoid as I want to keep the car long term. I will report back after I take it to the dealer.
New Bird sound.! Can anybody help?
I have a bird whistle or chirp on my acceleration. I think it is a new sound as I have not heard it before in the 10 years I have owned my Insight? It is really loud if I stomp on it during initial acceleration up a hill but does not do it while parked in neutral? Thanks!
Thanks Cobb and Zwolfe! The dealer wanted me to drop off the car for half a day to diagnose it so I ended up canceling my appointment. They would have charged me a diagnosis fee if nothing was wrong. The sound does seem to be coming from up high near the airbox and heads so for now all it good.
Cobb, I was going to say the same thing. I actually like the sound reminds me of my days in the Marines when I used to use a Class 7 sewing machine to repair parachutes.
I know one thing, if and when the sound ever stops I'll know I have a problem.
