The mima system allows a first gen insight user to do just that. The i2 its best to use the least amount of electrical power as possible, coast and regen as much as possible too.
I have a plug in kit that allows me to supplement the hybrid battery so I can ride ev mode as much as possible.
The hybrid battery doubles as the alternator so if you got the ac on or anything more than the lights it will draw it down.
Furthermore you also have back ground charging and assist that takes place that does not register on the screens.
