My car was cut off by a loose trailer today. I am driving a rental prius3 and they estimate at least three grand in damages.
I am ok and the air bags did not go off. The radiator and condenser were damaged. The hood is cocked funny but all the doors work ok.
The other guy was at fault and issued a ticket. Everyone tells me not to worry the other guys insurance will cover it, including the agent at his company. My insurance just took down my info and said I had to file a claim with his insurance, wtf?
I went to my Honda dealer to see if they had a stick shift crz.
Wish me luck.

I know! I know! That is the only problem I have had in 10 years. . Damage from another vehicle and I have been hit twice in 10 years both in a parking lot and I usually park away from everyone to avoid that occasion. Body men just cannot get it back together like Honda did originally.
Sounds like if you only have 3k worth of damages on your car, they may not total it. Wasn't sure what year your vehicle is. So they may fix it or at least, offer to fix it.
Someone else mentioned how tough it is to find someone to do quality body work. I completely agree. Virtually all body shop guys are on commission so the quicker they get through, the more money they make. So many of them get it "close enough" and let it go. Not everyone but the majority.
What you want to do is to find a GOOD body shop. Yep, there are some good ones out there. I don't own a body shop but I used to buy cars that were completely totalled and fix them and make them like new again. It takes a bit longer (hence the reason you can hardly find anyone to do it) but people like this do exist.
Good luck with your search and if you decide you don't want to fix it AND if they'll work something out with you where it makes sense, I might be interested in buying your vehicle to fix and sell.

I agree with Rick that it doesn't sound that bad. You've probably had the front end stripped down that far anyway. You could probably fix it yourself cheap.
You do have a situation where you have a ton of aftermarket toys that are valuable to you but probably take away street value. You have a lot of issues to weigh.
I seriously thought about a CR-Z with a stick. I thought, sure it's cool, it's macho, and all that manly stuff. OTOH, it's geared wrong, it gets worse mileage, the auto-stop is trickier, and if you take a look in the mirror, you aren't a race car driver. You are a guy that likes to tinker with things and get good gas mileage. And you aren't getting any younger. (I'm still talking about me, although it may apply to others) Reality check prevailed.
So did you buy that beautiful Milano Red CR-Z with a stick at Pearson? It looks good on the interwebs.
If you fly out here to Las Vegas and buy this black used one, I'll buy you the best prime rib dinner you've had in your life before you start your journey home.
You should be able to go through your own insurance and the other insurance will reimburse them. I always do it that way.

I can't say that this isn't the way your insurance works, but it doesn't seem right to me. I thought that you always filed with your own insurance, and then they went after reimbursement from the other party's insurance carrier for accidents where you are not at fault. I didn't think you had any legal standing or contract with anyone else's insurance. Take this FWIW, I am not an insurance expert.
Glad to hear you are OK and hope you have reason to keep hanging out on this forum. You have been a great contributor.

If they are at fault then their insurance pays so you usually go through their company getting the estimate. One option is to have them write you a check you cash and in the end you can really get it fixed at anyplace you like. My mother in law was hit and the other party was at fault. Their insurance company spent 4 months investigating their driver and the owner to see if they lived at the same address it was a mess. So their insurance company said if you are in a hurry get your insurance company to fix it and we will reimburse you. She ended up waiting, it was only 1k in damages, because her insurance company would have charged her the collision deductible of $500 up front and then paid it back after the mess was sorted out.
