Default Making a 12 volt battery.

I know I put a group 51 battery under the hood and its rather big and heavy. Instead of spending 300 bucks on a braille battery, I thought about buying some cells and making one. I see a pack of engineer nickel metal batteries are rated at 2500ma. Ive seen model lithium cells even more and cheaper.

The idea is to make a fake box the size of the oem battery with terminals for the negative and positive side. Then hook the cells up for 14 volt operation and at least 28 amps as that is the oem size for this car.

What do you think?

Why not? Go for it.

Just curious how you plan to connect the cells to each other and to your main bus bars.

I know A123 has started making some LiFePO batteries to replace 12v stock ones.

Says it weighs 60% less than an equivalent lead acid.

A123 zeros in on stop/start hybrids with 12V li-ion nanophosphate battery

Id considered a battcap, but looks like price wise and some elbow grease you can make an equivalent battery to the oem one for much less using lithium packs online and a fraction of the weight. I went larger to avoid using the charging system, but with my phev kit I can push more power through it which makes more mpg by using the charging system.

I am thinking of using wood to make a battery shell dummy and use typical electrical connectors and fuses to protect everything.

Cobb will this battery work for our Insights?

Braille Auto B129 Braille ''No Weight'' Racing Batteries

I like the weight reduction.

This is kind of my project as I am an exception to the rule. I don't use any of my accessories to my car other than the lamps and PS. Second, I have 4 thousand watts in the truck back feeding the IMA system, so basically I just need a cap between the battery leads and enough of a charge to light the candle the next morning. Down sizing your battery may actually hurt your mpg. I went big as I was using ac heavy and audio. I currently have my subs and amps removed.

I was thinking about using 4 of these in a series setup. I would from time to time hook the cells in parallel to a lifeo4 charger to make sure they are balanced.

Haven't done much with this yet. Looking at all aspects and how to do it quick and dirty.

I rather buy a power tool battery that is easily to return vs some cells from a China vendor on ebay that are non returnable if it doesn't work out.

I notice harbor freight has 12 volt power tool lifepo4 batteries for 20 bucks. They are rated at just over an amp.

Anyone got any feedback? Is an amp an amp regardless of battery chemistry? If the car came with a 28 amp lead acid, does that mean I also need a 28 amp lifepo4?

What I am trying to do is put the smallest battery possible or needed to light the candle next time I turn the key to save weight.

I had a guy say I could use 4 a123 cells.

Why not try one of the smaller Braille batteries? How about the one I linked a few posts up? I think by the time you bought everything you'd be close to the cost of a small Braille battery anyway.
