Default 2010 EX destroyed, looking for another

Hi all,

I purchased a 2010 honda insight EX w/ Nav. a couple of months ago and loved it. Unfortunately got into a four car pileup last week (a speeding bmw rammed in at 50+ mph into a stationary suv on the freeway triggering a chain reaction of crashes) I got smushed between two SUVs... and as you can see from the pictures, my car is totaled.

For those who are curious, the car held up well for its size, no injuries and the entire impact was absorbed by the front & rear. Still, I'm glad the insight wasnt the first to get crashed into, that might have turned out a different story.

Anyways, I'm back in the market and looking for an Insight again. I liked the navigation option but was wondering if it would be cheaper to buy a non-nav. EX (2010 yr model) and then add on an aftermarket navi w/ bluetooth & backup camera assist? Anyone done this to their non-navigation 2nd generation insights and what unit would you recommend?

And by the way, thank you all who contribute on this website, tons of valuable information and opinions for us fellow 'Insight-ers'.

Dang ... seeing lots of I2's in accidents here recently ...

Appears if you have a front or rear collision everything between the doors are OK as everything else crumples and absorbs the blow appropriately. Pretty good safety engineering ... except for the person you have hog-tied in the hatch.

I haven't ever done an aftermarket NAV install so I can't really provide any help on that front.

Glad you are ok.

That sounds like a plan. I think any nav unit you pick up is better than what the car comes with.

Wow that was like my car but 2x as bad since you got it in the back too.

Insurance company valued my car at about $19,000.

Was this on the 405 in Sherman Oaks? If it was I passed by as you were taking a picture of the back.

As someone who just bought a 2010 EX w/Nav (I had to because I wanted the bluetooth) and understands that she overpaid because of it, I'd say go with an aftermarket -- the fact that the nav system doesn't have traffic makes it virtually useless. At least here in the SF Bay Area where traffic is a constant concern. I'm still using my iphone to gauge traffic before choosing a route, which is annoying.

When I was shopping last month there were a lot of 2010 EX's with and without Nav that were going for about 18,500+. I got mine, with only 19k miles on it for $16,250 and added on $2,000 for 120k Honda Care, which was worth it for me. I searched and searched for a Certified pre-owned in that price range and wasn't finding anything so ended up just going to a dealer that doesn't certify cars but offers the inspection and extended warranty for around the same price. Wheel and deal and you might walk away with something for less than what the insurance co. appraised at!

Good luck - glad it held up so well in a bad crash! Makes me even more glad I chose this car

Thanks for the replies. The car did hold up in a high impact incident and I am glad I walked away un-injured.
CraigCA, the accident occurred in Long Beach. My car was valued just over $19,000 as well.
My search to replace the totaled vehicle goes on. The one issue I see with purchasing a non-navi model & installing aftermarket navigation is possible lack of steering controls. I loved the bluetooth switch on the steering which I used often to pick up calls.
sbrown1977, did I understand you correctly, you purchased a 2010 ex w/ navi. and 19k miles for $16250... thats a great price. May I ask what the original asking price was on your car? I had the 7yr/120k mile warranty as well, I plan on getting it again for the next insight I get. And I may go the non-certified route as well depending on if I am getting a good deal.

You might be able to call the warranty company and cash out the reminder of it.

Yes, I miss my steering wheel controls from previous cars, but you do get use to it.
