What is the opinion on the forum on the Odyssey batteries (same as diehard platinum). I found one listed for the 2010 I2 here - http://www.powerstridebattery.com/ca...l4-1-3l-hybrid I have read the Optima yellow tops are no longer reliable. One site lists a blue top dual for the I2. Don't have an issue so far with the 12 volt battery in our 2010 i2. However, one of these days we will need to replace it and so I am starting now on the research.

My uncle had an optima red top and it wasnt all that its cracked up to be. I was tempted to get a yellow top as that was billed as their deep cycle battery, but advance auto wanted 300 bucks.

I know hte gen 1 guys go with the small UPS sla batteries, however I tend to use several accessories at once where most of them drive like a hermit.

The past few months in this cold weather I typically turn on both defrosters before i park and plug in my timer to my block heater. Next morning I go in, crank her up and walk back inside as the defrosters clean the windows and side mirrors for me. I then unplug the block heater, hop in, put on seat belt and go.

In the summer I used the ac at various blower ranges, so I just wouldnt fee comfortable with anything less than what came in it, thinking 24 or 26 amps reserve.

The group 51 battery I had was a starter battery and it basically lasted a month longer than its warranty. Lets see how hte deep cycle goes.

I found that Exide makes a group 51r agm battery that appears to be compatible with the I2. See http://www.atbatt.com/product/25080.asp . It is even made in the US. Which do you think is a better choice the smaller Odyssey mounted on its side or the bigger and heavier Exide?

Exide claims their relatively new agm battery was designed specifically for hybrids and other cars that frequently turn the engine off and on. See http://m.wardsauto.com/suppliers/exi...opstart-demand

The warranty on the Exide AGM battery is 4 years. I am assuming the group 51R is the one that fits the I2. I believe the own battery is the smaller group 151R. Is the extra reserve power from the Exide and assumed longer lifetime worth the extra weight? Perhaps the smaller and lighter Odyssey battery may be a better compromise. But I am not sure how the Odyssey will mount with the OEM hold down features, as it is not a 151R.

If you need a new battery then go for it. Being a harbor freight shpper I got my battery there and a special AGM trickle charger. The one in the box is for GM, the one in the plastic package is for wet lead acid.

Cobb, we don't need a new battery at this time. (At least we think we don't!) As I said I am researching a replacement battery for when it is needed. I look forward to hearing how the deep cycle battery you installed works. I have pretty much written off Optima batteries as many individuals are saying the quality of the product has deteriorated since it moved its factory to Mexico (after it was bought by Johnson Controls). So it is currently between the smaller Odyssey PC925MJT (2 year warranty and designed for a 151R 26 lbs) and the Exide AGM Group 51R 33lb. The free period of the warranty on the Exide is 4 years. Exide also claims that there technology is superior to other AGM approaches, including Odyssey. See their brochure at http://www.atbatt.com/sku_pdf/exide-edge-booklet.pdf for test data. My question for you is whether we will have a mounting issue with the Odyssey which is smaller than the OEM 151R and must be mounted on its side. I already know that the 51R will work ok as you and others have installed it on the I2.

I might be interested in preemptively changing the battery if I thought it would help the mpg to a significant extent. Also, the car has been on the road for 4 years. I would not like my wife to have an issue driving it, especially on long trip from Oregon to Southern Ca. As the 12 volt battery is not really used for starting are the any modes of failure on the 12 volt battery that could render the car inoperative?

The 12V battery isn't really monitored real good on any of the late model vehicles.
Buy one of these and install. It will give you some warning.

Thanks Willie. That device looks like it provides very useful info and doesn't cost very much. Are there any guidelines as to its use?
