Default Used Insight, High Milage, need input

So Im looking at a 2010 Insight with 71k miles..

Used Honda Insight EX 2010 in Jacksonville, FL

They've just lowered the price again to 11988, obviously below market value.
Granted, I havent seen or driven the car, just started shopping recently.

I have a 2010 Forester averaging like 22 mpg so any change to a Insight will pay for itself quickly. I've put 58k miles on my Suby since Dec 2010.

My obvious question though is how high of mileage is just too high?
I've worked with this dealership multiple times with relatives and they're reputable to say the least, but that doesnt always speak for the car itself.

Please be honest with your opinions, you wont hurt any feelings here

Thanks.......

Default High mileage

If the car is clean, the deal sounds okay to me. They're asking half of what a new one costs, and 71K is by no means half of the life expectancy of the vehicle. It's early to tell how 2010 models will wear over the years, but if well maintained by you, it wouldn't surprise me you'd get another 200K out of it and *still* have value left at the end. If you're the kind of vehicle owner who likes to turn the key and never do maintenance, a 71K vehicle of any kind wouldn't work so well, but with the miles you say you drive, I'm assuming that maintenance is something you're accustomed to doing.

Good luck with your purchasing decision!

Most of us havent had any problems up to and beyond a 100k miles. Sure theres been a few lemons, but we can count those on one hand.

I guess to be on the safe side ask if they would toss in an extended warranty.

Truthfully, the worse thing for a hybrid is to sit and not get used or driven that damages the IMA battery.

If it's a Honda dealer they can probably sell it certified which basically adds a Honda warranty. But don't think I'd bother with any third party warranties. The IMA system does have a 8 year/100k warranty, which you would soon reach. But it's cheap enough to just put away 2-3 Gs for a future IMA replacement.

I've been watching the G2 forum for several years now and haven't really seen any issues so far. I haven't even really seen any IMA issues with I think one exception that was covered at low milage by warranty. Overall the car is a Honda so you get the good quality that goes with it. I don't have a G2 but my G1 is close to 300K and I've ready many many stories of others that are at that and higher.

Thats awesome.

I appreciate all the feedback.
I test drove this 2010 today and drove it home to let the finacee see it and see about the dogs fitting in the hatch.
The sloping roofline is a bit tight for the Golden, but its fine considering we only do short trips around town with them in the car.

It was quite odd though trying to get used to the pause at take off from a standstill and the engine turning off. I spun the tires once because it was wet out and I gassed it while the engine was off..that was weird...

In about a 20 mile drive, mixed stop and go and short spurts on the highway, it reached 37-38mpg pretty fast on the readout.

Only complaint immediately would be legroom for taller passengers on the passenger side. I'm 6'3" and am close to the dash, but not touching.
Nothing like my Forester, but the trade off is obvious, I'm almost doubling my mpg and the size is still quite usable.

Now to work the numbers. The "fun" part

If you want someone at a local Honda store to look at it, let me know. I have a buddy at the Coggin Honda on Atlantic. PM me, if you like.

The software update discussed in other posts on this board, along with some fresh trans fluid (change Honda trans fluid often!) will do a lot to address the jerkiness. But it is kind of a hair shirt car, especially to those of us used to a nicer car. A Prius might feel nicer, but the Insight is way more fun to drive. As a bonus, the instrument cluster is in front of the driver.

Yeah, I'm 6'1" and definitely need to have the passenger seat back further than the driver's seat. The glove box just sticks out a little too far fore me to.

With the front knee room and rear head room, it's not an ideal car for tall passengers. For a tall driver, it's fine.
