Default Emissions warranty for used Insight originally sold in non-CARB state

Hi All:

I'm new to the forum, and my partner and I hope to be in possession of a 2011 Insight soon. We are choosing between a couple possibilities (it's tougher because she wants a maroon one only).

A couple of them would involve getting cars from outside of California, and I can't seem to get really clear on how that affects the emissions warranty.

One car is from an out-of-state dealer (which I think means it would have 8/100k), another is a car from out of state, but can be transferred to a California dealer.

Honda's warranty seems to read that it's based on where the car is registered, but I read somewhere else on this forum that it's based on whether it was CARB certified or not originally.

I talked to the dealer, and they were not really clear about it. I talked to CARB, and they said it was up to Honda.

So, the question is: Has anyone found a source that clearly spells out the warranty for used Insights in these circumstances - especially the one wherein a non-CARb Insight is sold through a California dealer?

Thanks for any help.

I don't know all the ins & outs of this, but there are a bunch of states that keep to the CA CARB standards. You should be able to check the emission standards it was originally sold under with the VIN. I know that when you look up parts on an online dealer parts place like Bernardi, the drop down menus do get to a choice of KA or KL CVT variants. KA is 49 state (that is no longer 49) an KL is California standards. I don't think the warranty has anything to do with CARB, it's just shorter in some really hot states like Texas & Arizona. There are colder non CARB states with the regular 8/100 warranty.

Actually, in CARB states, the emissions warranty is 10/150k..... mandated by California law......

But when you look up warranties by VIN, you get a statement that emissions warranty is 8/100k with the notation that it varies in some states, so that's not terribly useful......

At this point, we've ruled out the non-CARB contenders in our search, so it's no longer an immediate issue for us personally, though I'm still curious how Honda handles it in these kinds of circumstances.....

I think it will become a more common issue as these cars age and change owners move around state to state and so on......

I was thinking of the IMA warranty that covers the battery pack. That is what is of most concern to buyers. I have never had an emissions related failure on any vehicle and keep most of them to over 200k. Honda corp can be talked into covering a lot after the warranty ends. They call it "good will" and dealer service managers have some to spend. I got an automatic trans partially covered at 140k.

Sorry for confusion, but we are talking about the same thing..... CARB calls it the emissions warranty, since their motivation for dictating it is to ensure that the low emissions characteristics remain effective.....

I didn't think of calling it the IMA warranty, maybe I'll search for that term.......

Thanks
