Thumbs up Some Mileage Karma Out There

MSN has an article about vehicles that are ticket magnets.

Apparently, driving a vehicle the size of a tank (say like an H2 / H3) at high speeds puts you high up on the ticket list. What is incredible is that even while these behemoth vehicles get such bad mileage, their drivers are spinning the hub caps off of the wheels going from Point A to B (typically one person in the vehicle)... I guess not much of a difference between getting 11 and 9 mpg?

My hatred of Hummers knows almost no bounds. Consequently, this article gave me quite a bit of joy.

Yeah, wow. They closed the Hummer dealer near my parents house in west central nj about a year ago. They had gotten rid of about 40 original real hummers 2 years ago after they sat without selling forever. now they can't even sell the mini hummers.

You know, when I moved back to the city a couple years ago, I was really bothered by all the huge SUVs that people seem to own, but yesterday it really hit me as I was traveling south on the FDR at 50mph, being thrown about every 10 seconds or so by the foot deep potholes...The insight's suspension is so completely ill equipped for NYC streets, and much more than so than ANY modern small car I have driven...in that moment of realization that my car's suspension truly sucked, I suddenly found that I really wanted a Hummer...as long as I could get a minimum of 60mpg in it.

Underneath the H2 and H3 they are just full size Chevy Trucks and Chevy Colorado Midsize trucks, respectively. They are no better or worse than the original vehicles they were derrived from. They appeal to a market segment and fill a need for some people, same as the Insights I and II and all other vehicles.

All this demonizing is silly!

To each his and her own, I say. Let folks drive what they want.

I got a kick out of your post! It's totally true by the way, the part about to each his or her own of course, not to downplay that at all. ...still wasting energy is kind of the wrong answer.

I guess I thought it was funny because I agree about huge trucks that get horrible gas mileage and I especially hate it when a huge SUV or truck driver is clogging up a parking lot because they can't drive it around a corner or squeeze it into a spot. I drive a Civic most of the time but when I need to move something I drive a Canyon midsize truck which is what the H3 is derived from. I get way better mileage in my Canyon than anyone out there in an H3 by the way.

Underneath they are the same, but the bodies on top are significantly heavier than the stock Suburban bodies (at least in the H2). Heavy enough that the H2 is classed as a farm vehicle and therefore does not contribute its' paltry 8(?) mpg toward CAFE standards.

The H1 is a significant vehicle for what it can accomplish offroad. It's not really designed to be driven long distances.
