Even though I'm a moderate conservative I've been called a "tree hugging liberal" or "Hippie Liberal" on many occasions by hard-core conservatives. And although for a while it seemed like only liberals seemed to care about the environment, I've noticed more and more conservatives buying hybrids. I even notice quite a few Prius's parked at my church and I have no idea who they belong to. And So I wanted to create a poll to determine exacltly where the numbers break down. I am hoping to see an even split between the two sides.
Please don't turn this into a political flame war... I want it to be a scientific analysis of numbers, not a political debate.
Good idea! I like this post! I am a registered republican. I am not right wing, I am actually a BIT right of center. I bought the Insight II for 2 reasons:
1) my wife is a tree hugger (despite being a Republican as well, After growing up in USSR she fears the left). She has not gone shopping w/o recycle bags in years and is a total environmentalist nut! She dreamed of us owning a Hybrid.
2) I hate supporting fanatical regimes with my money. I am now paying 50% less for gas and though its a drop in the ocean, if everyone followed suit our enemies would have much less leverage over our economy!
Anyway hope that does not come off as a political rant, I do not intend on offending anyone. Just wanted to show that not all Hybrid owners are left wing Michael Moore loving people!
Yeah, I am conservative. I do recycle, but have not embraced the overpriced shopping bags as yet. (I do recycle the plastic ones at the store, though). A lot of what I do has less to do with 'tree hugging' than being stingy with my tax dollars. Landfills cost money, which is stolen by our governments in the guise of 'environment'. My trash company makes it easy with its single stream/container curbside recycling, so it is no more effort than taking the weekly trash out.
I bought my first hybrid in 2004 solely because it got the best MPG, not because it was 'green'. Come to think of it, that was the reason to buy the second and now the third hybrid...In fact, if diesel were cheaper and more available, and delivered better mpg, I would switch to it ....

I consider myself a Moderate Democrat. But that aside. I have been called many things since purchasing my I2.
I have been called Prius wanna be. I have been called a hyper-miler hypocrite. Even though I don't hyper-mile. Tree Hugger comes up quite a bit. I don't mind that one so much since I am trying to do my part to conserve energy and help make our planet healthier.
Some people just think I am posing because hybrids have become so popular lately. Though I didn't get my I2 to be like everyone else. I got it more on a selfish reason. I wanted to feel better about myself in knowing that I was a least trying to do the right thing.
Really I don't think political affiliation has anything to do with doing the right thing. I would venture to say that most Insight owners come from a very diverse political background. I think we all just want to do the right thing. Politics aside, we do agree on one thing. We really like the Insight for all its' quirks.
I had to put "other". I was a registered libertarian until recently where I switched to Independent. I wonder if some folks think "independents" are somewhere between liberal and conservatives? I guess I never thought of it like that. I don't think I want to be in the middle of that mess.
No party to me seemed to espouse any common sense whatsoever. I certainly don't have all the answers but all of a sudden I feel like a man without a party.
Great, now along with shopping for a 2010 insight I may need to shop for a party too.

Oh, one can have differing views from the 'main political viewpoints': You support say Roe vs. Wade, but hold that governmet centric health care is wrong, or that everyone has the right to vote, but want proof of that right (ie; citizenship), etc.
I try to vote for the person and philosophy, not the affiliation....

I try to vote for the least evil, no matter the party. I don't think I've ever voted for somebody I really felt good about. (I think I'm turning into a grumpy old man) HEY,KIDS, GET OFF THE GRASS AND STAY AWAY FROM MY WHITE 2010 INSIGHT!!! (which is a figment of my imagination still since I have not bought it yet).
I just really hope this topic doesn't devolve into a giant fight - this is a car forum and I hope it stays that way - this probably belongs more in an OT section.
