Cargo space is a big deal for a lot of people, as is the ability to fold the seats down. On this website we tend to think in terms of commuting vehicles but a lot of people think in terms of the weekend vacation. Where I live on a Friday in the summer, the highways are packed with rooftop carrier wielding SUV's headed up the coast.
Think about how many people drive a "crossover" such as a CR-V, Matrix, etc. This has as much room but gets 50% more fuel economy.
A hybrid minivan is not far-fetched at all. To a certain extent, bigger vehicles actually benefit more from hybrid technology on a cost basis. Going from 20 to 30 mpg, for example, saves a lot more money than going from 30 to 40 mpg.
