Default Pure City Driving.

Hi I got my Insight right off the truck in April. I have filled the tank one time. I drive around 6 miles total per day and it is pure city. I do mean city as in stop and go constant. If I am not stopping at lights it is stop signs. I do not run AC and have tried one week in ECON mode and one in REG mode.

Now here is the deal:
If I drive to work and on weekends no more than 6 miles round trip per day, I get a solid 38 mpg. If I take the car on the interstate for 5 miles on a weekend on top of the city driving during the week I get 40-42 mpg. I am hoping that the city driving can improve with time. But I do see that if I run it longer during the weekends I can add almost 10 more mpg if I am careful.

Now about 3 weeks ago I took a friend shopping. We drove in the city, she wanted AC and I did not use ECON mode (due to AC going warm at stops) and the car ran at 34 mpg. Over all to me the 34 is good because for the stop and go my HCH 06 ran like 27 mpg! Now if I would drive down town all week, and got to the interstate I could get 40 mpg on my 06 HCH easy.

So there is my gas so far. I now with time this might increase, but the city driving can kill the mpg I have seen it first hand. But if killing it takes it to only 36 mpg, shoot I am cool with that!

Gee, you may want to look into one of those GEM electrics for your weekly chores if you only go 6 miles....I see a lot of those on base as well as in the city of Coronado where the speed limit is 25MPH

A 6 mile trip barely warms the seat bottom, let alone the motor

Hard to get any kind of mileage with such short trips. I have a 64 mile round trip drive everyday 50/50 city/highway. I recently changed my route to a shorter one but with lower speed limits so it works out to about the same amount of time. I do however get better mileage this way. In my previous car, a 06 Civic I got around 33 mpg, I now get around 52.

Smile My Insight + city driving is better than highway

I'm not complaining. I just find it odd that I seem to get better city mileage than highway.

Both are way better than EPA. My first normal commute tank after 2 days is showing 50.2 MPG. When I get on the highway it starts to eat into that number a bit. In city driving it always brings my average up!

I admit I am paranoid. Trying to merge onto the highway with big trucks barreling down on you when you're running out of on-ramp is quite scary. (All the while my Insight's engine is screaming for dear life!)

I drive around town during lunchtime errands and usually have the a/c on and it keeps bringing my average up.
