Default When AutoStop Stopped

Today I got stuck in traffic for about 2 hours. I covered about 5 miles during that time is 0-5 MPH traffic on I-91 S CT.

Big accident, anyway, auto stop did its thing until about an hour into the stop and go. At that point, the battery was fully exhausted (although it was still showing some reserve left) and no more auto stop.

After the accident and normal speeds, it took a good 2 to 3 miles of forced regen until the battery was happy again.

Lost a total off the tank (~300 miles put in) of 3 MPG. Went from 60.5 to 57.0.

Not sure how many times did autostop, but it was alot.

Amazing how much you burn at idle. My scion with its 1.5l engine would show .12gpm consumption at idle.

Might not be a bad idea to rev it to 3 grand and recharge it.

1. Light to no use of the ac
2. limited top speed to 45mph.

Here I am going 56mph and getting 56mpg.

Max Leaves-

1. Keep speed around 55 on the highway, posted speed limits in town.

2. Micro Manage the accelerator to maximize fuel ecomony. Always try and find the least amount of pressure to keep the car at current speed. (without going into EV mode) You will be surprised how much a small pressure difference on the accelerator can make.

2a. To handle hills, speed up at the bottom and use the momemtum to help get up the hill. New England is really hilly, but it is like a roller coaster (up/down) so at the top of the hill I am at 55, bottom 65-70, then going up, lose speed back to 55 or less. This is much more effective then going at a constant speed.

2b. Be mindful of traffic behind you. I could let my speed drop below 50 going up hills, but I only do that if there is no one behind me. Otherwise, I let is drop to around 55 then kick in some gas. This hurts fuel efficiency but keeps me in commuter traffic flow and keep others happy who are more aggressive.

3. Limit use of AC. Up here in New England, it has been a cool summer. I think I have used AC only about 1/2 dozen times.

3a. If you have to use AC, use it in short bursts. I close off the other two vents and blast it on high while going down hill. Works pretty good. Of course, if it is 95 outside, you will probably have to leave it on all the time. But I notice fuel economy drop and slight power loss when it is on.

4. Limit short trips, I find I am using my bike more around town. For example, we have pool passes the pool is only a few miles away. Bike it.

5. Be mindful of upcoming traffic and stops and try to coast as much as you can to try and even even out the stop and go.

I've been averaging middle 50s now for the past few months and many times (trips) the MID has been over 60. One time the MID cracked 70 for a brief 10 mile stint!

Getter better fuel economy definately takes more work than just driving the car. You have to pay attention more, it is a continuous feedback loop between the MID, me and the accelerator. For me, that is part of the fun of the car.
