I know Bish had some issue with EPA, we will see how the Volt fares.

hmmmm, even GM has issues with the EPA testing....at least they did a while back...

I wonder what the compromise will be? Recall that initially, tje EPA wanted the ICE on all of the time, vice only when needed....

We shall see....

Even if they're way off and it *only* gets 150 mpg it's still phenominal and it's actually a somewhat attractive vehicle that is useable for the average driver/family. I've parted with near $40,000 before for a car, so I'd have no problem doing so a year or two after introduction if this lives up to the claims and the materials, etc are worthy of that money.

Makes you wonder if Toyota or Honda or Ford (considering their success with the new Fusion Hybrid) have a similar vehicle that is simply being kept under very tight wraps and will be unveiled late next year.

Get that down to around 30 thousand dollars and they might have something.

Doesn't Honda's MID max out at 150mpg?

If the Volt achieves EV-only for 40 miles worth of driving, isn't that infinite miles per gallon for a city commute? I'm glad their claim is a *reasonable* 230mpg!

I like the idea of plug-in hybrids but, as a city dweller, I have neither a garage nor an external outlet I can plug into overnight.

JP

PS- AHHHH!!! That's what all those 23 smiling outlet ads were all about! I figured it was Chevy related by the font but I couldn't figure out what the 23 or 230 referred to... (my best guess was Volts but that didn't make any sense in context).

It is infinite miles per gallon as long as you re-charge the batteries within any 40 mile segment! Interestingly, once you surpass 40 miles, the actual mpg is barely 35mpg!!

Once they start letting the public have them you'll see numbers all over the map. I for one would be closer to infinity since most of my driving is for very short distances.

I'm sure you'll get your Joe Dumbasses out there that never plug it in and bitch b/c its getting significantly less than 230 MPG.

Sigh....another group with a knee jerk reaction to an unproven statement....

EPA simply cannot support the 230 claim....they want the gas engjne on all of the time (I reported this idiocy earlier..)

So, 300 miles of 8.5 gallons, no regeneration, no this, no that...

Why doesn't the EPA just outlaw innovaton and the Chevy Volt????

Why does anyone bother designing anything???????????????

You have to admit that slapping any "mileage estimate" on the Volt is basically worthless. You thought that the phrase "Your mileage may vary" was applicable before...

I think that at this point the 230 MPG number is a good thing as it MIGHT make people realize how much of an advantage a plug-in hybrid has over any other vehicle. But other than that the number is useless in this case.

No matter what, the EPA is going to have to come up with some new testing features in 2010.

Fully electric cars will be on the market then, and way too many people will be confused over the lack of a "mpg" on them. These cars will always be at infinity mpg, but they can still run out of fuel.

There will have to be a new unit of measuring all electric or mostly electric vehicles.

mpkW?
