Default 1000 mile update

Well we have had the Insight for abut 6 weeks I guess.
I had it for a couple of days at the beginning, because my wife's mother was passing on and she was staying with her father.
Anyway, I set the high mark of 53.3 mpg about the third day.
This was a good thing because it gave my wife a pschological edge in trying to maintain a high mark instead of forcing it, or giving up.
SHE LOVES THIS CAR. I mean LOVES.
And even with her strange shortcuts, bad driving habits and a 4 miles to work
commute w/ 1 mile trips between schools during the day, she has managed to average 44 mpg. Not bad.
She even learned a trick from me, which is, I use the paddle downshift to get some acceleration without moving my foot at all.
All the mod cons and toys and stuff make a fun ride, and I am glad she is happy.
I am also glad I don't have to watch her beating up the 97 Civic I got her in 2000 anymore. That was a great car, but she didn't like it because I paid for it . LOL !
On a side note, my 98 Civic ( Which I bought at the same time as the 97)
got rear ended by a Ford Explorer on the highway, and is trashed.
That sucks because I just had decided I was going to keep it ( felt really fast after the Insight, and got 33-40 mpg ) I really liked that car. And having had it for 9 years I knew its story. Good part is I was unhurt. bye bye fun car.
I just went out and got a 2001 Civic EX. Supposedly the worst Honda ever.
But the price was right and it is not rusty and all the toys work.
I am praying that it will be as good as the 98 but I know better.
Its a nice drive tho'.
Bottom line, at 1000 miles the Insight is still making us smile.
J

I am at 8500 miles. It snowed today and temps in the 30s, but still got over 50 MPG to and from work.

I'm saving something like 50% to 65% in fuel savings over the previous car. Good daily driver and a miser with gas. Inexpensive as well. Back in April when I got mine, the nearest hybrid was about 5 grand more. Toyota slashed prices, but insight still best value hybrid for the money.

Also, not a dime on maintenance yet. Oil life at 30% with another 15% to go.

Very consistent.
At 44-45 mpg that is 150% of the mpg she was getting with the older civic. ( Leadfoot)
Nothing to sneeze at. And that is with her only mildly playing the game.
Are you serious ?
The subject of "when do we take it for maintenance"? just came up yesterday.
10,000 miles to the first oil change ?
Holy crap I will have to read the rest of that encyclopedia they put in the glove box.
My wife's sister bought a Prius . Yeah, it cost more. We literally just spent the difference on another used Civic. Toyotas don't do it for me. No fun factor. I've been in Civics since 1976.
Another side note. My iPod ( nano) plugs in works perfectly and sounds good in the car.
Wife has a Shuffle which does not work. I simply burned a data CD of her music and it plays perfectly. The small things matter.
The Insight rules .

I am nearing 900 miles and so far have an overall average of 44-45 mpg with probably 60% or more city driving and not doing anything that slows down other traffic - that is, I essentially drive like I drove my Accord, with one exception - I don't go up long steep hills as fast. My best longer trip so far was a shade over 60 mpg - a 30 mile trip on back roads without a lot of traffic during which I got to spend a lot of time cruising at about 40 mph, carrying one passenger using auto climate control on a cooler day - mid 50s, so heat rather than AC. These numbers are from the MID. I'm pleased - these numbers are better than advertised/expected.

Yup.
Is it just us Honda people getting these cars? We do not see many.
Numbers ARE better than advertised . With great ease. And it looks cool.
Dealer (big dealer ) told me it was the third one they sold. They had the inventory to prove it. We had our choice. (speckly polished metal )
And that is another small thing my wife just loves. The climate control. This is the bees knees to her. And that's good for me.
I like that it is so easy to disengage Econ mode if you are in a jam, or shift at will

Wifey went up to her father's house today and when she came home she was literally dancing and singing about her 60+ mpg bar graph rating for the trips forth and back ( 25 m. each way)
It is working.

Eff the EPA or whomever.
